| Sweet_C's Full Review: Apple PowerBook G4 15.2 in. (M8859LL/A) Mac Notebo... |
I purchased my 15" powerbook for school/work use. I chose this over the other models because of its performance, decent size screen, and its sleek Titanium design finish.
I'm not a mac head or anything but I enjoy using both pc and mac. This notebook though, produces a lot of heat and I was forced to get an antec notebook cooler for this reason. I was kind of surprised because my Toshiba P25 doesn't get as hot as quickly as the Mac. I'm thinking it's because it is so thin. But anyways, I thought that was a downfall of this beautiful machine. If you can get past the physical issue then you're good to go.
Opening the notebook for the first time was simple. Everything came preinstalled. Loading software was easy but when I downloaded files from macromedia.com and tried to open them, it reverted to trying to open them as a word doc? Kind of funny. But an easy fix, just locate the StuffIt Expander app and set it as the default to open those files. It's a snap.
I enjoyed using the overall interface. Mostly because it will automatically search for updates from Apple and update everything for you at the touch of a button. Pretty cool considering keeping up to date is a time consuming thing. When I installed Final Cut Pro, Apple already had the udpates readily available to me to download instantly. Nice feature that I wish ahem Microsoft would make easier.
Something that bothers me though is that even though I have the 80gb hard drive in this sucker, it seems like I used up all the space just to host programs. Easy fix, get an external drive. But for the non multimedia user, then this is the perfect notebook to just download music, do your word docs, powerpoint whatevers, and surf the web.
The wireless connectivity on this thing is surprisingly week in my opinion. I find it difficult to get a signal to my home wireless network to this thing even if its right in front of the box!
The USB, firewire, svideo, etc are all located on the notebook in convenient places. The finish on the notebook is a target for scratches and blemishes. Hard to keep from getting a ding here or there.
Overall though, this is a nice machine, gets hot, and is easy to scratch.
