| gskiser's Full Review: Apple iPod classic 1st Generation 5 GB (MAC - M851... |
When I first opened the box my iPod came in I was amazed. The design is BEAUTIFUL. It has a large 2" backlit LCD screen, bigger than any other MP3 player out there. The controls are amazing. iPod features a scroll wheel to easily, precisely, and quickly scroll through hundreds of songs to get the one you want(You can also set up customized playlists to keep certain songs).
Another bonus with the iPod is that it uses Firewire transfer. I transfered 700 songs to it in just a few minutes...that's 700 mind you. Also, the iPod batter automatically charges through Firewire through your computer! The firewire speed is blazing, and everytime you plug it into your Mac it updates your songs automatically. No more telling your MP3 player which songs are new and need to be uploaded. iPod works with iTunes 2 to automatically keep your iPod up to date. It's amazing. I have every CD I own, plus songs downloaded from the internet, all on my iPod. Every song I own now fits in the palm of my hand and can be taken where ever I go. It's such an amazing concept.
The iPod can also double as a Portable Hard Drive. It's 5 gigs and can be used to transfer anything from one computer to another. You can even install an operating system (I have OS 9 and OS X on mine) and can use it as a bootable hardrive. The portable hard drive capability is a definite plus seeing as how you can transfer huge files onto the 5 gig harddrive and go.
The sound is incredible and that's that. I encoded all my songs on 'good' quality encoded at 160kbs. Even on 'good' quality the sound is wonderful. It sounds just as good, if not better, than my sony discman.
The battery is the best I've seen, I've listened to it for 10+ straight on a road trip before I needed to recharge it. It charges in about an hour, and as I mentioned before, you can charge it through your computer's firewire port or plug it into an AC adapter if your away from your computer.
The factory headphones are a little uncomfortable due to their size (I find them a little too large). However, I could just have small ears. Anyway, it's not an issue because I just use my sony headphones with it.
I noticed that some people list a con of the iPod as being that it won't work on PC's. In my mind, how is this a 'con' or a negative thing. It was developed by Apple to work only on Mac's. That's why it works so well, because the integration between the Mac and iPod work seemlessly together. It wasn't designed to accomodate the PC user. It was designed to compliment the Mac OS and iTunes. Making it cross platform would have sacrificed it's best features. How is this a bad thing? If you're a PC user, then it's not for you and too bad. But don't rate it negatively simply because you can't use it for something it wasn't desinged for. There is life outside Microsoft, and life outside Windows. If you own a mac, then this is a must have. I was a little hesitant about it's price at first. However, since I've owned it I have no regrets. For what you get, plus the fact it can double as a portable hard drive, it's an incredible deal at $399. If you own a mac, and decide to invest in this, you won't regret it!
