| Brettkatt's Full Review: Apple Computer JBL Creature PC Multimedia Speaker ... |
Recently, someone I know needed some new computer speakers. Quality and price were a factor to this person. He wanted something that wasnt terribly expensive. The speakers also needed to have some kick to them as well as good sound quality. Luckily for him I knew of just the speakers. I recommended the JBL Creature Speakers.
The Creature Speakers are just another great speaker form JBL. I personally dont own these speakers but I have used a set for about the last six months. If I needed to buy a set of computer speakers these would be one I would get.
The Creatures now cost $99 from their previous high of $149. White, gray, and silver are the three colors that they come in. A set of Creature Speakers is made up of three Speakers and a few wires that Ill get to later. The set consist of two little speakers and a sub-woofer.
Their shape is why I imagine they are called Creatures. If you havent see these speakers the best way to describe the shape is to think of a Hershey Kiss Chocolate. First take the Kiss and pretend that the bottom is square while the rest still has its rounded shape. Now go up about 2/3rds of the way and lop off the top. Now, the place where you cut the top from needs to be molded into a dome shape. Finally, The bottom portion, between the legs, is slightly arched upwards.
The little speakers are about 2 square, at the base, and about 2-3 inches high. Each corner of the bottom has about a ¼ inch leg. The little ones have visible 1 round speakers on the front. These speakers rest beyond an opening that looks like a phantom face from the old Scooby-Doo cartoons. From the back of them are about 5 wires that plug into the rear of the woofer. The right speaker has the volume buttons on the front. The volume increase is on the right while the decrease button is on the left.
The sub-woofer is different than the smaller speakers. First of all there is no opening on the front. The bottom has holes and a tube to let the deeper sounds emanate. Unlike the smaller ones this is larger. The base is about 8 square, and it is about 9 high. The legs are ¾ in height. The front corners each have their own dial. The left dial is base control while the right one is treble control. On the rear of the sub-woofer are the power button and four ports. One of the ports is for power. Two ports are for the little speakers to plug into. The final one is for the cable that attaches to the source of the music such as a tape deck, computer, iPod, or whatever else you may have.
Set up is very easy. The wires coming form the little speakers are color coordinated to match with the inputs on the sub-woofer. The source cable is also color coordinated as well. Due to the coordination of colors set up should take no more than a couple of minutes. The only thing to slow you down would be where to put the wires and sub-woofer.
I personally like these speakers. I listen to all sorts of music ranging form Classical to Harder groups such as Guns N Roses. No matter what genera of music I am listening to the sound quality is amazing. With classical music, the high range of violins to the deep sounds of timpani emanate with perfection. With Big Band, Metal, Rap, or with whatever kind of music is played the speakers keep the same consistency as with classical. No matter what the volume the sound never looses clarity. The treble is never over powered by the sub-woofer. The sub-woofer never gets obnoxiously deep. Other speakers loose quality with the increase of volume or base sounds; these dont ever loose quality.
I highly recommend the JBL Creature Speakers. They are great for hooking to a computer, an iPod, or any sort of musical device you use. For the cost of $99 a set and that they dont take up a lot of room, you cant go wrong with these speakers.
