Cons:High-Resolution upgrade does not offer independent sizing of screen display.
The Bottom Line: The MacBook Pro is the best laptop out there. I recommend going to the store to look at features, especially if you plan to upgrade resolution.
After giving it a tremendous amount of thought and doing ample research, we decided on the MacBook Pro 17". We upgraded most of the system including 2.6 GHz, and High Resolution glossy screen.
Overall, the computer is BEAUTIFUL! Crystal clear display, comfortable keyboard, easy to use (duh! it's a MAC). All the bells and whistles...
With that said, we do have a couple of complaints that have actually made us question whether we should exchange it for another. The BIGGEST issue that is making us question our purchase is the downside of the high-resolution screen. With MacBook Pro, if you opt for the high-resolution, you are committed to working with a font size that is barely legible. AND, hard to believe, MAC has not come up with a way to alter the size and positioning of the display font without altering your resolution. Ok, if I'm decreasing resolution, why did I pay to upgrade it in the first place?
Here are your other options:
Use the size increase (command +) function in each window to increase font. this does not work on all images within each window and it does not alter the size of the menu options or other static icons and/or words within the page.
Use the zoom function which enlarges everything onto your screen so that it no longer fits. When you use your mouse, your desktop image moves all around the screen. This is quite irritating and somewhat nauseating.
We've talked with tech-support at MAC and they weren't able to offer much more than a possible fix with future operating system updates, but they aren't even certain that will happen. It is merely a rumor at this time. We were told that if MAC gets enough complaints about this (and they've had MANY) then usually they will come up with a fix.
Finally, the glossy screen (which I was told would offer an even clearer image) offers a glare that is reminiscent of monitors of long-ago that begged for after-market glare deflectors. This is something I should have known and not bought into.
The laptop is large but fits comfortably in your lap. It does weigh 6.8lbs and while its thin, it is still wide. It works for us because we use it in the house and don't plan to travel around with it.
