johnstrass's Full Review: Apple iMac 17 in. (M8812LL/A) Mac Desktop
I now have in my posession a top-of-the-line "prosumer" Apple computer (the iMac mentioned in this review) and a Dell running at 2.4 Gig. IO need the latter at work because we have custom software that wont run well on macs.
The iMac delivers in ease-of -use. Everything works well, provided that it is a true version. The iSynch software still does not work well for me, and because it is a beta version, a call to apple revealed that they wash their hands clean of any issues with this betaware. Oh well.
that aside, it is gorgeous. It should be called iCandy, because it is such a pleaure to look at and use. Every detail is well thought out. Unlike another reviewer, I find no problem with the DVD burner noise. In fact, I made my first DVD movie from my sony camcorder and it is spectacular. The only problem is that I needed to buy a how-to book from a store to get the "intuitive" features of iMovie and iDVD together. That said, the 20 dollar investment was great and these days, most manuals (if there are any) are terrible anyhow.
Now, the software issue. Some people compain that ther si not engout mac softare. Nonsense. Al of the major programs are for both PC and mac and cross-platforms seamelessly. Yes, there are mor PC games, but are you really buying a 1500 computer for games when a 300 x-box does the trick better than either? Finally, the included software (iMovie, iDVD, itunes, etc) are easily worth over 1,000 dollars, if there WERE a PC version of them. It turns out that there is no comparable PC program except for the iDVD, for which roxio Toast is an Ok competitor.
In contrast, with my top-of-the-line Dell, I still have no easy way to make movies on it (I need this feature for work). So, I find myself literally taking my work home becuse is is easier to just do it on my iMac at home.
In short, having this iMac is like having a BMW 328. The Dell is like having a Mustang GT 5.0 The mustang wins in the large engine/pure muscle category, but the BMW is such a reliable effecient speedy pleasure to use because every feature is designed to work together.
