addison1203's Full Review: Apple iMac 17 in. (M8812LL/A) Mac Desktop
This is my first mac. I've had it for about 3 months now. The switch from Windows was very easy. The computer its self is wonderfull!! I love the way the screen moves around!! OS X is very very simple everything is drag and drop. The way everything in OS looks is aqua wich looks real nice. I mainly do photo editing on my computer with iPhoto. iPhoto has been great, the orginization and slide shows are the best!! iPhoto has not "unexpectedly quit" yet wich is good becase most of the programs do that occasionaly. AOL is the worst it "unexpectedly quits" every other time I run it! It doesn't take up much space. One problem is most of time i keep the screen in front of the CD tray so I can see it better. (I have it on a shelf thing)When the CD comes out it hits th screen. But thats not too bad. It freezes up occasionaly ( about 1 time every 2 weeks).Sometimes I have small files that need to be transferred to another computer that makes me wish it had a floppy but its ok without it (CD's are really cheap now anyways). The keyboard feels really nice. I got my memory upgraded when I got it which i strongly recommend. I also got a 80GB hard drive wich I have almost used up already. It comes with a 1 button mouse that looks cool but a 2 button mouse is must have upgrade, I would have a terrible time using a 1 button mouse. You can't upgrade anything inside the case. That might be a problem if you plan on using lots of games and need to change video cards every once in a while. I know if you buy this you will be very pleased. I have absolutly loved mine!!!!
---that was about 1 year ago, now i have had it for about 1 1/2 years. I will now inform you how it the machine does on a long term basis.
Problems: I have had numerous problems w/ either the computer itself or different apple programs. The people at apple tech support (great people and great support) practically know me personally by now. The last thing i had to do was delete all my programs and reinstall the operating system because of a "kernal panic". That sucked. Also, the Mail program doesn't work. I called many times about it before the people at apple just gave up because there wasn't a solution. Other than the kernal panic and the mail program messing up there wern't to many large problems.
What still works: At the moment I use the computer mainly for Internet, Music, and Pictures. The iPhoto is starting to get slow though because I have so many pictures and the processor is very slow.
An 80 GB hard drive came inside the apple, i found that it was too small for all the songs, pictures, and programs i needed. I bought a Maxtor One Touch
160 GB hard drive. It has worked well so far. Excellent for backing up files. Also a word of warning. The current Mac OS X does not support all printers. To speak of for myself, don't get the HP Photosmart 7550 if you decide to get an apple computer.
The verdict: If you mainly want a machine that looks awesome, has relitivly no worms or viruses able to get to it, is used for mainly just internet, and you don't use games much then this is the computer for you. Otherwise, get a new Power Mac G5 or a Windows machine.
