Spiderider's Full Review: Apple PowerBook G4 15.2 in. (M8592D/A) Mac Noteboo...
I'm a PC user by day (at the office), and Apple user by night (at home). I usually can't wait to get home and work on my computer.
I've been using Apple desktop computers for years, but only recently purchased a laptop. I do a lot of graphics and video work on my macs, and wanted to be able to work when I travel, and to keep in touch through the net.
I was happy to find that my G4 is like having my desktop on the road. The computer is as fast and as powerful as my home machine. With an airport wireless network in the house, I can carry this laptop anywhere in the home and access the net. The computer also has an internal 56K modem for dial-up access in hotels, or at a friend's house.
The slim chassis of the Mac laptop makes it easy and convenient to carry along, but there are no compromises in performance owing to the small size and portability. In short, I found there was no trade-off to be made in having access to my computer wherever I go.
The internal DVD player allows you to watch your own movie selection on a plane (or anywhere else). Plug in your headphones and listen in stereo. The tiny speakers on board are pretty tinny sounding for music or dialog.
The drive also permits you to listen to CDs while working, or just sitting back on the plane and dreaming.
You can burn CDs on this Mac, which is convenient if you're heading to a meeting, and working on your slides during the trip. Or burn your own music CDs if you like.
The Mac operating system, OS X, is stable and easy to use. Macs are very intuitive. I've never needed a help desk, like I do at the office for the PC.
Now that OS X has been around, native programs for the system abound. And there are Microsoft programs written especially for the Mac as well. So you could share files with PC users if you desire.
But I stick mostly to graphic programs, and find that the laptop runs them as fast and efficiently as my home desktop computer. So I can do whatever I would do at home, while I am on the road. I upgraded to a full GB of RAM so that I am not limited by memory insufficiency.
This computer is fast and responsive! The screen brightness is adjustable, but I find it's not QUITE as vivid as my home screen. Particularly in bright light. But I suppose that is the case with all laptops.
The screen is larger than most laptops I've seen, as the margin around the screen is quite narrow - effectively giving you more viewable monitor.
The only thing I have a hard time getting used to is the touchpad input device. I use it on the road, but carry a USB mouse with me to use at a desk where I have the space. Just find it more familiar, I guess.
This is called a laptop, but I use it on tables or fold-down tray tables on planes. I find the computer runs a little hot when perched directly on your lap.
The battery lasts a good 4-5 hours. I bought a second to allow me a whole day of charge, away from a wall outlet.
If you are looking for a great machine "to-go," this one is fantastic. Small, lightweight, slim. An elegant design that not only works well, but looks sleek and refined. Light touch keys are pleasant to use, once you get used to a slightly smaller keyboard. it took me a lot less time to get used to it than I'd expected, and I was typing away in less than an hour.
