Except, it's the wrong time of year. I firmly associate apples with fall. They're what kick off the one time of year when I do any cooking--October through January.

And I'm always looking for new apple recipes to use up the bushels of apples I impulsively buy. Sounds like this one is a real winner!

Its 5:30 and I have been at work since 8:30 AM and I don't have a clue when I will get home and you are writing about Apple Pies. You are mean...

I just want to run to the nearest bakery and get me a slice of pie now!

Pie crusts! (Reply to this comment)
by voxpoptart
Glad i happened to read this review. Apple pies, honestly, are not my favorite sorts of pie -- i was reacting to your authorship and the concept of "pie". But as someone who took long enough to learn one decent pie-crust recipe, the notion that i'm missing out on about 30 better crusts has me interested. Any excuse to bake more...

cheers,

We're so doomed--the Baker's Catalogue store is about a 45-minute drive away, right down the street from my mother. ACK! You haven't lived until you've been to their bakery...

"sort of like a brain sorbet"

*laugh* That is such a great phrase! I'm just so addicted--both to the cooking and to the eating. ;)

Apples . . . ` (Reply to this comment)
by ed_grover
are my favorite fruit, especially in pies. I can't bake for squat but my sister makes a fab flakey pie crust with a lattice top that's loaded with fruit. She said when she was first married she made one for her husband who didn't know what he was getting because his mother made them with all dough and few apples. She cried for days. Now he know better.

I stick to doing small paintings of apples and give them away as gifts every now and then. Right now I have three apple painting on my walls: a Johnathan apple that's cut open to reveal the flesh, some dark red winter apples set in a field a stubble and a white compote full of Pinky-red apples with pronounced striping.

The Baker's Catalog is a dangerous temptation for me. And never mind your excellent descriptions, the cover of this book is enough to make me drool. I think I'm going to have to make some apple pie soon... -- Telynor

A good apple pie is a thing of beauty! I usually make mine with Granny Smiths, because we like our pie a bit on the tart side and not too sweet, but I love Winesaps, so I'm sure it'd be great in a pie, too. This sounds like a great book, only I'm afraid owning it will be a terrible temptation. :)

...about Sylvia Plath the other day and you (via your review) reminded me of her. Apparently she baked in between writing, sort of like a brain sorbet. Just don't get too close to the oven unless you have to...

Oooh, yummy! That sounds wonderful! Yeah, I'm rather fond of fruit desserts, so finding even more and better ways to make them is certainly a win as far as I'm concerned. ;)

like my kinda book. My favorite desserts are apple-based desserts. I have a pretty awesome apple pie recipe. I bake it in a cast iron skillet - it makes superb piecrust. And since moving to Belgium, we have a very productive apple tree on our property.

Great review!

Memories are good. :) My grandfather had an apple orchard on his property, but it was well past its prime and not something he cared for professionally. I just loved walking in it.

Close to home (Reply to this comment)

My grandparents, with whom I spent my summers growing up, raised apples (among other fruits). I used to be a pro at telling people who came to buy at our fruit stand which apples were best for what.

Sorry for talking about myself, but your review brought back memories, in addition to making me hungry.
