nad_masters's Full Review: Apple Shield Zone APPMCBF invisibleSHIELD Full Bod...
So, what is InvisibleSHIELD? The best way to describe it is a thick Saran wrap, that is tacky on one side so it can adhere to your devices and form a clear and skin-tight protective layer for it from scratches and scuffs. It's great for cell phones that goes into the same pocket as your change and keys. However, they are also good for portable laptops as well, that get carried around a lot.
After purchasing my first MacBook (the most inexpensive MacBook they had), I still want to protect the STILL expensive notebook! It's white, shiny, and clean... and I want to keep it that way!
At the mall, there was a Zagg InvisibleSHIELD shop close to the Apple Store, so I walked my brand-new, never used MacBook and had them cover it.
I'm not new the the InvisibleSHIELD, however. When I bought my iPod Touch, I had it covered from day one. My friends and my brother covered their iPhone 3G. Back then, we ordered it from Zagg's own website and put it on ourselves (which isn't hard).
Now that we found a Zagg shop that is an official installer, they offered to install the $50 shield for $20, making a total of $70. It's pretty expensive, but then again, it's a drop in a bucket compared to the cost of the MacBook itself. I went ahead.
Installation I watched as they first figured out what generation of MacBook I owned. It took a while, but they figured out it was a first gen (even though it was brand new?). They then sprayed down the MacBook and wiped it clean of fingerprints and other debris with a soft microfiber towel. After which, they start peeling a section of the shield and sprayed it down as they peeled. They then sprayed the top of my laptop with a quick motion (they didn't want to get it too wet), and started to apply the shield.
All told, there are 4 major pieces, and a small one for the trackpad's single click button. The screen is not covered at all.
The pieces cover the top of the laptop (the lid), the bottom part of the laptop (bits of which cover the front and sides), the battery, the wrist rest area, and of course, the mouse button.
It took about half an hour to do the entire thing. It would have taken me much longer if I were to do it myself! These guys obviously do a lot of devices, and have much experience!
Results The MacBook is a bit shinier than before because of the plastic coating, making it look even more attractive! However, because of the white color of the notebook, I can see every speck of dust that got caught between the InvisibleSHIELD and the laptop.
Thankfully, it is a lifetime warranty, and they will replace it for free. I just need the time to go back there to do it again.
Other than that, I am happy with the results! The surface of the shield is slightly tacky, so it's easy to grip. I like this texture on my iPod Touch because it is less likely it would slip out of my hands or off the table.
I'm also happy that I don't have to be too careful with my laptop. My Acer Aspire One netbook have a glossy lid as well, and I found a deep scratch on it that I don't remember putting there myself!
All in all, the peace of mind is worth the $70 (with installation). The cost of installation isn't too bad, considering I that I could spend that time elsewhere in the mall, and the frustration of doing it wrong, then sending the darn thing back and waiting for another one is a non-issue. Also, Zagg have a lifetime replacement policy, so if it starts to peel or yellow (it has happened with my iPod Touch), I can get it replaced for free at the store. To go through Zagg directly, I would have to pay $5 for shipping every time.
