| seattlety's Full Review: Apple iHome Clock Radio for iPod (IH5W2) |
The iHome is an alarm clock, stero system for your iPod. It delivers great sound, great features, and a resonable price tag.
Buying the iHome
I bought the iHome shortly after getting a video iPod. I wanted a stereo that could easily play my iPod, plus I needed a new alarm clock, so hey thats a two-in one. I bought it from the Apple store for around $120, but I know you can get them cheaper now from various websites. When I unpacked the iHome I was very pelased; it has very solid construction adn looks very nice and clean. (I got the white one). It was not hard to set it up. It has a power adapter that goes into the wall and atatches into the back of the iHome, and it also has an AM and FM reciever to plug in. A remote control also came with the iHome.
Layout
All of the controls for the iHome are on top of the unit in front of the space where you dock your iPod. The controls are very easy to understand. The sound and the volume are clesverly controlled by click wheels (much luike on the iPod its self.) There are two wheels (one on each side). The wheel on the left controls the volume (clockwise to increase volume, counter-clockwise to decrease it). The wheel on the left controls changing radio stations, as well as setting the clock and alarm.
Sound
For its size the iHome delivers excellent sound. It is very clear and not muffled. Neither does it have that vuibrating sound like some of the small protable speakers. It even handles bass very well. Not to mention the volume goes pretty loud, as well as very quiet. THe sound comes from the two speakerson either side of the iHome.
Radio
While the FM radio works okay, the AM radio still has a ways to go. The iHome gets an overall decent reception compared to other stereos, so no special kicks here.
Alarm
The Alarm set-up on the iHome is really nice. Its very easy to understand. You hold the alarm button on top of the unit for 3 seconds at which point the clock freezes. You then use the right click-wheel and turn it until you get your desired time (this is a VERY nice feature because the clickwheel allws you to change the time as fast or slow as you want in either direction, not like some alarm clocks that only go up minutes, and if you go to far, you have to start over again.) You also can pick how you want the alarm to wake you up. You can either choose the alarm (which is a pretty typical alarm; its definetely loud enough, but it wont wake the dead or anything. Or, you can pick for you iPod to wake you up. Just pick whatever playlist or song you want to wake up to on your iPod, turn off the iPod and select "Wake to iPod". Whatever song your iPod was left on will play whent te alarm goes off. THis is a fun feature not many alarm clocks have. You also can choose to wake up to the radio station, which you select, turn off and click "Wake to Radio".
Remote Control
Something handy the iHome comes with is a small remoe cotnrol. (Its very small, so dont loose it.)The remote works okay to about 20 feet awy. But you have to aim it at the iHome and it takes a second to read it. Still a good feature being that buying a remote unit for the iPod costs like $60.
Overall, this is a great buiy and I really have enjoyed it. I would defientely recommend it to anybody.
