| ncoday's Full Review: Apple iPod 1st Generation 10 GB (MAC) MP3 Player |
I have used many types of MP3 players: Solid-state Flash Memory-based, MP3 CD Players and then Hard Drive-based MP3 players which this falls into.
Solid State Flash Memory players have several huge limitations - cost of expansion (if even possible), limit of storage on current flash media.
Some cons are that they are shock proof
MP3 CD Players - Cheap media and infinitely expandable.
Some cons are not shock proof, don't try going jogging!
Hard Drive-Based Players, namely the Apple iPod 10GB.
(I have the old version that does not include the remote, but essentially the same as the new ones)
Features:
- Firewire transfer speed (400 Mbps) - Transfer 5 GB of music in a few minutes, instead of a few hours with USB players.
- Download Audible.com content. Listen to audio books on your player. Great for that long plane ride.
- Built-in contacts: Store phone numbers and addresses. This MP3 player does double-duty as a decent PDA.
Firmware v. 1.2 update adds the ability to sync with forthcoming iCal with iPods. All you do is plugin your iPod and not only does it synch with iTunes effortlessly, but will also sync with iCal downloading all your appointments.
Lots of accessories and freeware applications available.

- I purchased the remote for the iPods at the local campus bookstore. I find it useful as I can stick the ipod down in my pocket, and clip the remote to the strap on my backpack and have easy control without having to dig it out of my pocket.
It would be much better if the remote had an LCD and also if I could actually navigate outside of the playlist or artist/genre I have selected.
Update: 07/10/03
My iPod has begun experiencing the problem of diminishing returns on the battery charge. I purchased the TAP program at CompUSA and I plan to use it to get the new 30GB 3G iPod and use it on my PC!
However, there are several websites where you can buy and install new batteries for the 1st generation iPods:
