| sisterpink's Full Review: Apple iPod 1st Generation 10 GB (MAC) MP3 Player |
This year when I purchased my new computer, I also decided to spring for a lovely little musical device by Apple: a 10GB iPod (second version.) I bought it because not only could it store all of my music from my many CDs which I'd previously been lugging around with me, but promised not to skip at the slightest little touch, unlike my CD player.
The true beauty in the iPod is that it not only lives up to all of the hype, but goes farther than I could have ever anticipated. When I bought mine, it was advertised as being able to carry "1,000 songs in your pocket." Truthfully, though, the 10 GB model allows you to carry about 4,500 songs, an appointment book, some games, an alarm, playlists, homework, and a myriad of other things in this tiny, attractive music player/hard drive combonation.
The iPod is far easier to use than any CD or MP3 player on the market. You push the buttons and it goes, none of this programming nonsense required. What programming there is is optional, and is made incredibly easy to do and understand using text menus in combonation with icons, rather than one or the other.
The extra features include a clock with alarm, calendar with appointments (which can be exported from just about any appointment/calendar program), games, and some other additions including special playlists and play options. Everything extra is useful and logical or fun, with free software updates available for download from the Apple website.
File transferring... it's never been easier. You plug the iPod into your computer, the songs download, and you're ready to go. That's it. You can also turn your iPod into a combonation music player and hard drive, so that you can carry important files with you along with your CD collection. This is also terribly easy to do, and if you should need any help, the Help function is readily accessable and was written so you can actually understand what the heck to do (still a relative rarity among computer help files.)
The battery life is great, it lasts about nine hours and doesn't take long at all to completely recharge, maybe fifteen minutes. You can recharge it using the adaptor it comes with, or plug it into your computer and it will recharge that way.
The two things that I am most happy about my iPod are the sheer capacity of this little thing, and the fact that it simply doesn't skip. I got the 10 GB model, I have over three days of music on it, and I still have about three gigs of space left. The possibilities boggle the mind. Also, it doesn't skip. At all. I can actually have music with me when I run or walk!! It's amazing, I've never had that before. It has 28 minute skip protection, so I suppose if you were to shake it up and down for about half an hour, you would start to get some skipping, but that's never happened to me. Then again, I'm not using it while I trampoline. ;)
Okay, I lied, there are three things. The third is that everybody is so fascinated by my iPod, it's a real status symbol. Sure, that's not really the iPod's 'fault', but it is a nice touch. :D
If I had a complaint about the iPod, it would be that the metal back scratches very easily, and that the controls get dirty very fast. These aren't very big problems, though, but I do wish that the face was easier to clean. Once the oils from your skin get on it, it's hard to get it off.
Should you get it? Yes. Is it worth the price? Absolutely. Does it live up to its promises? It exceeds them. I totally recommend the iPod to anyone and everyone. Mine is great as it is, but with new lower prices and larger models, along with new software and improvements, things in the iPod world keep getting even better all the time.
