| sprock's Full Review: Apple iPod 2nd Generation 10 GB (PC) MP3 Player |
Apple computers were always hailed as being the "coolest", the "best looking", but i for one certainly was never a fan. An avid windows/microsoft kinda person i never strayed away from that. All of the sudden something called an iPod hit the market like a bombshell and people were buying them like it was the second coming. I researched, i read, i saw, and decided to conform and splurge the 200 bucks and buy the thing.
The Look
-----------------------------------------------------------
Yet again Apple doesn't cease to amaze it's consumers with another chic and trendy design that is the iPod. But iPod is much more than meets the eyes, of course. The iPod is about the size of a deck of cards but can hold up to 10000 songs (40gb)! The iPod has a rather large LCD screen for viewing up to six lines of text, and built in is an LED backlight for situations for better visibility. The back casing is chrome metal in which is you order offline can be laser engraved free of charge. The front casing is a very clear and sharp white, the buttons and also the touch wheel are of the same color. The buttons slightly dip into the ipod, which are touch buttons (similar to a touch screen) which will only function when touched by fingers (no pens, etc). The buttons include: PREV PLAY/PAUSE NEXT MENU. When on LED the buttons will light up red. Only a slight touch will activate the buttons, but at the top of the iPod is a 'LOCK' button which can be slid over. The touch wheel is a bit of a new feeling, but it is very easy to use once you get used to it. At the top of the ipod there is a jack for headphones which is a standard 3.5mm jack so any headphone should fit. If you choose to buy a remote with your iPod the jack for that sits atop the ipod as well. At the bottom of the ipod is your Fire/USB connecter outlet which the cord is included. If you choose to buy a dock all you do is put the ipod right in and connect the dock cords to your computer, and you are updated!
-----------------------------------------------------------
Features
The 10gb ipod holds up to 2500 songs, all depending on the size of the song. The iPod comes with a pair of little ear bud headphones which also come with two refills over covers for the top. There are also new in-ear headphones avaliable as well. The iPod also comes with a firewire cable, but if your computer does not have a firewire cable hookup a USB hookup is included as well. Firewire is a much quicker way of updating your ipod as opposed to using USB. The iPod also includes an itunes disc which is needed to work the iPod. Newer apple computers already come installed with itunes. The music is encoded as AAC which reduces the file size of the music so its saving room on your computer but still retaining the file.
The menu of the iPod gives you five options:
-Playlists: On itunes you can make playlists in which you just select and drag songs into them, name them, update your ipod, and they're right there ready to listen!
-Browse: The most general form of search, you can search through artist, album, song, genre, or composer.
Extras: The extras include a clock with a song alarm, calendar, personal phone book, notes, and games.
-Settings: This settings menu includes an about option which shows you the owner of your ipod, the amount of songs, the capacity your ipod has, the avalibility left, and the version. A shuffle and repeat option is avaliable under settings as well as a backlight timer setting option. You can change the language, contacts, date and time, and the clicker noise through settings as well.
-Backlight: By clicking this it simply turns on your light.
Battery Life
Unless you are going on a long road trip, the iPod will last a pretty long time, about 8 hours to be in fact. Though be careful when you turn your ipod off, a gentle brush of a finger will get it going again so make sure to press the lock button located at the top.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Itunes
Itunes its probably the greatest program i have ever used. By entering your credit card information, you can buy songs $.99 each with a click of a button. Itunes has a vast variety of music ranging from hundreds of genres, any music lover can find several of their favorite artists/songs on itunes. Itunes has many special offers including: pre-releases, EXCLUSIVE itunes CDs from big artists, celebrity play lists, user imixes, music videos, movie trailers, and free downloads.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Downsides
Synching:
When you configure your ipod with your computer most users will click 'update my ipod automatically' instead of 'update my ipod manually'. I made that mistake...When you plug your ipod in your computer it doesn't put the songs on it, it SYNCHS it with your computer. When i used a friends computer to get some songs, it wiped out everything i had and updated her library on to mine. I had to burn the songs on a CD and import them one by one to make it right again.
Scratches
The ipod scratches incredibly easily. Unless you make a bubble for it live in for the rest of its little ipod life, its going to scratch at one point or another.
-----------------------------------------------------------
All in all, if you are a music lover, an iPod will probably be one of the smartest purchases you will ever make, its worth the money and more!
