| FluffyKS's Full Review: Apple iPod 2nd Generation 10 GB (PC) MP3 Player |
The Ipod is a great MP3 player. I'm very happy with my purchase. The price was a bit steep though but to be able to have my entire CD collection in my hand or in my pocket in unit as attractive as it is portable made up for that. In addition to being an MP3 player the Ipod can be used as a portable hard drive to transfer non music files! Awesome!
The Ipod is so easy to use, and the Firewire connection makes transferring files lightning quick. I can transfer entire albums in about 10 seconds each. The Ipod itself looks marvelous and feels very sturdy even if it does scratch easily, a minor problem at most I think. The navigation system is as easy as can be and the sound from the Ipod is excellent provided you have MP3's encoded well and the Ipod's EQ is not used.
The Ipod though wonderful does have some flaws from lack of some features that no MP3 player at this price range in this day and age should have been without. There is no lineout for one. The remote is terrible. You can't tell right side up from upside down without looking at it as there is no tactile feedback on the buttons to help you.
The remote's clip is just not sufficient, it does a very poor job of holding on to anything. The earphones that come with the Ipod sound decent but are a bit large and the foam coverings that come with it are very hard to put on. In the event that you do get the foam coverings onto the earphones, they cover up the R and L letters on the earpieces which designate whether the earpiece is for the left or right ear. The Equalizer settings on the Ipod are terrible. They do nothing but degrade the sounds and distort the bass if you use either the bass boost or Rock setting.
The Musicmatch Jukebox software that Apple provides with the Ipod is terrible. It doesn't do a good job with the ID3 tags, oftentimes displaying the title of a song wrongly on the ipod after transferring the songs. It also will constantly try to take over as the main media player on you computer and start up automatically in the task bar which of course hogs resources and slows down start up time of your computer. Worst of all is its method of adding songs to the Ipod. Whether you want to add 1 song or 100 songs, Musicmatch will completely empty out your Ipod and then re-transfer your entire library back onto the Ipod. you can imagine how long that can get if your music library starts to reach the Ipod's capacity of 10 gigs, 20 minutes just to add one song. Also Musicmatch seems to get slower at transferring songs over time, taking hours to load when it should be minutes. Luckily there are third party programs that can be obtained which do a much better job than Musicmatch. Ephpod is the most popular alternative and free.
Even with it's faults I still find the Ipod to be a great player because of what it does succeed in being. A small, light, attractive, easy to use MP3 player with great sound (without the use of the EQ), that can hold an entire CD collection and then some.
