| ambrehm's Full Review: Apple iPod 2nd Generation 10 GB (PC) MP3 Player |
It seemed like it took forever for Apple to finally decided to produce their coveted mp3 player for the Windows market, but it finally came. As soon as the iPod for Windows came out I was eyeing them, the only problem was their cost. To many the price tag on one of these bad boys is enough to turn you away, but for the hardcore music and gadget lovers there is always a way around the money issue. The beginning of this year I finally got enough money to purchase the 10 gb iPod for Windows, a choice I have yet to regret.
The storage space on the iPod is amazing. I chose the 10 gb model since it seems the 5gb model is backordered for a very long time, or maybe indefinitely. There are rumors of a 10, 20, and 40 gb model line but that is besides the point. To be quite honest the 10 gb model is actually too large for me. I know there are people out there that have 3000+ mp3s on their computer, but I am not one of those. I doubt those with 3000+ or even 2000 (which is what Apple said the 10gb should hold) listen to all of them. I usually only listen to a maximum of 5 albums at a time, so that leaves plenty of space for other music on the player. As of now, I have 728 songs on the iPod with some 5 gb still remaining and I dont even listen to all of those. They are just songs that I like and you never know when you might want to listen to them. To put it in short terms, the 10 gb model (and the 20 for that matter) should supply you with more then enough space for all the songs you could ever want to listen to!
For those of you like me that dont want to clutter the extra space up with songs that you will never listen to you can also use the iPod as a external hard drive, a very handy feature. This allows you to add a secondary hard drive to you laptop or desktop and allows for mobility as well. Though it is not a good idea to leave the iPod hooked up to your computer 24/7 since it will keep the hard drive spinning continually it makes for fast easy transfers between home and office.
The iPod is also extremely easy to use. The directions that come with it are a joke, they hardly tell you anything, but thats ok since you can figure out how to use the iPod efficiently in 5 minutes or less, a monkey could run this thing.
Size is also a nice addition. The small size of the iPod allows for portability no matter where you go. At a little larger then a credit card in height and width you can conceal the iPod about anywhere.
Now for something negative. If you spend anytime around an iPod user the battery issue will probably come up. The thing is that iPods seem to very rarely live up to their advertised 10 hr life span between charges. The new firmware version (1.6.2) helps the battery life quite a bit, but if you change songs a lot and dont let the iPod run off a playlist dont expect to get very much life out of the battery. The good thing about this though is that the iPod charges very quickly. You can have a 80% charge in an hour, and 100% in four hours.
The touch sensitive wheel on the 10 and 20 gb models is a welcome feature. Before purchasing mine, I used several 5 gb models which have a mechanical scroll wheel. Though this works fine I prefer the touch wheel as you dont have to worry about breaking the mechanical wheel or getting it dirty, its just easier to maintain and has a better feel.
The iPod does not have a bunch of bells and whistles, just your standard shuffle, repeat, etc but for me thats fine. I bought it to play music and it does so very well. If you are looking for a solid mp3 player that can hold a ton of music with good quality you cant beat an iPod.
