| james318's Full Review: Apple iPod 1st Generation 5 GB (PC) MP3 Player |
First off, I would like to say that i have always hated apple computers. In my opinion, they have way too many problems (even more so than pc)and are only good for two things- music and video. Well, the ipod proves that apple has indeed become a leader in the audio field. I have had bundles of mp3 players and they all had too many faults for my liking (I know, I am very picky). The ipod stands above the competition in almost every area.
First off, lets talk about size. For an mp3 player that holds 1000 songs, it is amazingly small. Unlike archos and rioriot, it can easily fit in your pocket and weighs a mere 6 ounces. The casing looks really cool, with a completely white front and silver backing. The only disadvantage to the casing and screen scratch easily. Mine is in pretty bad shape, but hey, I'm listening to it a lot more than looking at it, so appearance doesn't really matter a whole lot to me. The dot matrix display is really smooth and has an amazing backlight, but the screen is where the unit gets scratched the most.
The features are what stands the ipod miles above the competition. There are more EQ settings than I can count, random and repeat settings, backlight timer settings, sleep timer, contrast settings, a game, clock, and more. Also, you can search your library by artist, album, genre, composers, and more, or you can just play songs from your own playlists that you drop onto it from the computer.
Sound quality is great on this player (same as cd quality at 320kbits/sec), but if you are an audiophile you will want some better headphones. They are the best included phones I have seen yet, but still not great.
Battery life is good, but could be better; mine gets about 9 hours, which is reasonable. Also, I really would have rather had a separate power cord to charge the ipod, but instead you have to remove the firewire cable from the computer and connect it to the ac adapter. oh well, its no biggie.
Storage is incredible. I have 20 cds and my entire computer collection on mine and it still has 3gb left. Believe me, you really won't need more than 5gb; maybe if you have over 100 cds you should get a 10gb; when you buy a 15 or 30 gig model you are just wasting money.
Now we get to the main problem area: windows compatibility. You have to buy a firewire card and install musicmatch, which in my opinion is really not very good software. Putting up with the software is a small price to pay for the features on this player though.
I have had a ton of mp3 players, including 8cm mp3 players, full size mp3 cd players, memory card based mp3 players, and now the apple ipod. And now I am truly hooked. I have never been fully satisfied by an mp3 player, but this one is truly very close. Buy this; you wont be disappointed.
