The Bottom Line: For me, it's one of those obvious answers. The Apple Ipod is just a great mp3 player. I am very happy with mine and believe I will continue to be.

| natsham's Full Review: Apple iPod 1st Generation 5 GB (PC) MP3 Player |
The Apple ipod is still one of the best mp3 players out in the market despite its long ago arrival back in October 2002, over 600,000 have been sold and its no surprise why. Being an ipod owner myself I can proudly say I have been only been let down once, as far as Im concerned that in itself is no cause for worry. Had anything gone wrong more than once, I perhaps would have not had bought it.
The ipod is very impressive. It feels like your holding a very small computer. With its wheel to navigate through your options, it gives you the ability to scroll through your music by artist, album, song, genre or composer, if that doesnt suit you, then you can scan through your playlist as well. A playlist offers you better organization and management of the various music files in your ipod by controlling what music files are played and in what order. The number of playlists you create is limitless. You can scroll your way to settings and set it to shuffle or repeat your songs as well as set it on a sleep timer (15,30,60,90 or 120 minutes) so that you may listen to your music and have it automatically turn off at your chosen time. You can also set an alarm, change the language, and illuminate the backlight timer. The backlight timer allows you to decide if the backlight stays on 1,2,5,20 seconds or if you prefer to always be on. I cannot emphasize enough how appreciated these features are.
The ipod comes in 3 different models. All look the same but secretly hold minor differences. The first has 5GB, the second has 10GB and the third has 20GB. For those who are very unfamiliar with computer terms, GB is the unit of computer memory, or in other words, the data storage capacity. This basically lets you know the maximum amount of songs you can have on your precious piece of machinery.
The 5GB model (weighing at 6.5 oz and 4 x 2.4 .78 inches) holds up to 1,000 songs (which is about 5 hours of music). Most other mp3 players out there such as those made by Sony and Rio have a maximum of 4 hours.
The 10GB model (weighing the same 6.5 oz but with slightly less depth at 4 x 2.4 x .72) is the updated version of the first ipod and as a result has quite a few more extras. Holding up to 2,000 songs, it includes a scrolling wheel, which no longer physically turns but is touch sensitive thus reducing its vulnerability to dust, dirt, or sand. It also includes a contacts file which allows you to keep track of all your known companions, their names numbers, address, everything. It contains a calendar, a clock, and a simple game most well known as Breakout. Buying this version, you receive a smart looking black belt clip as well as a wired remote control.
The 20GB model (weighing a little more at 7.2 oz and 4 x2.4 x.84 inches) is obviously both slightly heavier and bigger. It does, however, hold the largest maximum song capacity in the history of mp3 players with 4,000 songs. It also includes everything the 10Gb model has to offer.
Overall, its really hard not to want one of these hip little items, however, there is a slight drawback to be specific. First, the price range that these little guys fall in is expensive. The 5GB is currently priced at $299 which is already high considering other mp3s out there offer themselves out in the price that ranges from $50 to $150. Keep in mind, it really depends on how well you want your mp3 player to work. It seems the more you pay, the happier youll be. The 10GB is $399 and the 20GB is still at a whooping $499. The other drawback is that there was one time when my ipod froze (just like a computer) and I discovered that holding two buttons down at the same time (menu and play) you can unfreeze the problem.
I own the 10GB ipod, which after careful investigation, I am convinced is the best choice out of the 3. I have even gone to the limits of attempting to convince my friends who are considering pulling out the cash for an ipod of their own. I must also add that although ipod is made by Apple, a Macintosh computer company, they do make ipods available for PCs. Everything is the same, including the prices, they are just built to function in tune with PC programming. For me, it makes me wonder how I have been coping with an ipod for the longer part of my life.
