epinionleaf's Full Review: Apple iPod nano 1st Generation White (2 GB) MP3 Pl...
I would like to preface this by saying I am not an apple person. I didn't own any apple products before this ipod and was very sceptical to the hype. I am still sceptical to ALL the hype, but I can say that they do have their act together when it comes to mp3 players. There is a reason why they own the majority of the market share. The iPod is very inuitive, works well, has a nice design and good features.
One thing apple has going for it, if nothing else, is creating satisfaction of purchasement. They packaged the ipod nano like it was a precious artifact, or something. It came in a fancy formed stylish matt black box. Everything was neatly tucked away and in expensive looking wrappings. Not the crinkly 2cent wrapping that you get cheap tshirts in, and not the cheap thing jumbo plastic that you buy general electronics in... no they went for prestige and had FANCY wrappings.. which makes you feel like you bought something very valuable.
Yes, I agree it DOES seem fragile, HOWEVER, i read a review on a site where they had sat on the ipod (like numerous people have written they are afraid of), dropped it at a run, from biking, from fast biking, droped it from high heights, and drove over it with a car. Yes it quit working in the end, but the sitting, and the regular dropping on concrete didn't stop it from working.
Scratching. There has been a lot of complaints about the scratching of the surface. I left the plastic that covers the surface ON. I CAREFULLY sliced out the scroller wheel in the middle of the plastic (careful not to cut or scratch the ipod) and exposed that to the 'elements' but the rest of the ipod is nicely protected underneath the shipping 'protection plastic' You can't even tell it is on, so I think I will keep it that way, until THAT gets scuffed. I have heard rumours that people put it in and out of their pocket 20 times and said 'it seemed my pockets were made out of steel wool, the ipod looked like it was 2 months old after 2 days)
I like functionality a lot, and the scroll wheel is the biggest bonus. The colour screen don't hurt either. Itunes is easy and nice to sync to. I am looking forward to listening to some audiobooks and groovin tunes.
The size. Yeah, it is small. When i opened it i said.. 'oohh yeah... it IS nano' very thin and elegant.
One of the largest selling points for me was that it was a flash media type of mp3 player which means NO MOVING PARTS. I think in the long run, this will prove valuable because there is nothing really to wear out. Although I spent a little more money for flash memory instead of a microdrive (like in any mp3 player larger than a matchbox), I think it was money well spent.
As far as price goes. I think you will be happy spending the extra dollars on an iPod nano. If you are going to be using it a lot, it is worth being able to use iTunes, and have the ease and functionality that the ipod will provide. Concerning buying a ipod photo, or nano, or video for that matter, I chose the nano because of the flash drive. In the end, I had to pay more per GB of room, but having no moving parts was a big selling feature for me. Having 20GB of room on the ipod, did sound enticing, however, I don't have more than 500 songs that I listen to at one time, so 2GB more than fills my needs. It is never more than a few days between syncs to my computer. Charging goes through the usb cable as well, so while charging you can update the player with your most current tunes, really no work at all. I have set up iTunes to sync my most favorite, most played and most recently added to my library, this way, it is no work at all to have the most current music on my player.
