I was first hooked on Apple because they were offering the deal to college students. You may have heard of it: Buy the computer, get the Nano for free. Well, I took the bait, and I'm very very glad I did. Amazing 13 inch white MacBook aside (check out my other review for it, if you'd like), I got the awesome little white Nano (2 gigabytes) - complete with full rebate! At first, I was just going to send it to my little sister, since she wanted one so badly. I really had no original desire to keep it for myself. But I could not bring myself to send it. Why? I fell in love with the Nano myself, and decided to keep it. I'd never had a portable MP3 player before, let alone one so small and compact. And the commute to school each day was kind of long without it.
For someone who is a bigger music guru than I, this Nano may not have as much gigabyte capacity as you'd like, but for more moderate tune-goers like myself, two gigabytes is perfect. You can fit around 500 songs, I believe. On this version of the Nano you can also play games, and put pictures on.
I was scared to death of dropping it, and then one day finally did. But, it survived. I have dropped it several times since then as well. It did loose a few of it's more minute features, such as the 'play count' feature ( when you plug it into the computer to charge, it updates on iTunes how many times that song was played while listening to it through your iPod). It did have a few weird moments where the volume would change unexpectedly, or I couldn't change the volume at all after it was so many seconds into a particular song. However, these "symptoms" dissipated after a week or so, and it still plays just as well as the first day I got it.
My biggest gripe would be the wimpy earbuds that came with it. While they're cute, and becoming something of an icon in their own right, their sound quality is horrible. The first time I let them hit cement pavement, the right one no longer worked. I had to resort to others (not an Apple brand), which I found gave a surprisingly higher amount of sound quality.
All in all though, I cannot complain. I'd heard about iPods for years, and never actually thought I'd get one. But now that I have it, I'm very glad I do. If you're looking for a newer generation - by all means - look away. Rest assured that Nano's first generation has set an excellent standard for on-the-go music-enjoying quality, and I would recommend them in a heartbeat.
