donnatheo's Full Review: Apple iPod nano 5th Generation Silver (16 GB) MP3 ...
Watch out Flip Video Camera~ I just could not wait until Christmas to get this new MP3 player/video camera. Apples 5th generation iPod Nano will be on thousands of Christmas lists this year! I bought it for the MP3 player, but also love the FM radio, video camera and voice recorder.
My job requires me to have a small video camera to record aspects of my job and so I am always on the look out for a small, 'digital diary' type camera. The iPod Nano video camera is easy to use, small and compact, with a fairly decent quality picture though definitely not a high quality HD camera. It will suffice for posting video clips to the internet such as (Youtube, MySpace and Facebook). Taking video clips of funny things your friends and family do is also very fun and the camera is totally adequate for that. It’s great for a digital diary type video- this is what I use it for. It may not be the best camera for video quality for your most memorable moments of your life, but is certainly fun to have around to get shots you might have missed otherwise.
The video is great for outdoor or indoor shots where there is very good lighting, it does not take good video in low light.
The sound quality on the recorded video is very good, but not excellent.
The camera can take as long a video as you probably would want ie., you are not limited to 2 and ½ minutes clips.
The Nano video camera is very similar to the Flip video camera in quality and ease of use. The Nano does not have a zoom lens, which is a drawback.
The Nano has some really cool video filters that teenagers and kids will love. You can not edit your video while still on the Nano, but can do it later if you have a video editing program on your computer. But you can add these really cool filters such as blur, mirror and kaleidoscope while the video is still on your Nano.
The 16GB Nano can hold approximately 16 hours of video. You can play your videos back right there on the camera and viewing is nice with the new larger 2.2-inch screen. You can also delete videos you do not want.
The cool thing about this camera is…it is small enough to take with you everywhere and chances are ….you will probably have it with you at all times because it is also your MP3 player! This is a great little gift for children as young as 8 years old that are technology savvy. They can make their own little movies that are so popular right now and upload them on the internet for others to see if they want. Uploading the video is done with a flash cord to any Mac OS or most Windows computers.
The FM radio is a great feature of this iPod Nano. Many MP3 players have had this standard on them for years and now Apple is on board. The cool thing is… you can re-wind and re-play anything on the FM radio, it has a ‘live pause’ feature for up to 15 minutes of memory. This feature is unique to the iPod Nano...no other MP3 can pause, rewind and re-listen. Another cool feature is you can tag songs that you hear on the radio for future purchase. Smart, smart, smart...of course you purchase them from iTunes.
There is a tiny built in speaker on the iPod Nano which means you do not need an ear bud to hear…however you will probably need one in a loud environment. There is a built in microphone / voice recorder, which is awesome. It records for as long as you need, for example, a lecture at college you need recorded or a fight with your spouse that you want to play back to prove you were right. LOL! Great little feature and the Nano is so small and sleek you can hide it in your pocket.
There is a pedometer on this Nano and an armband so you can wear it on your walks or runs to keep track of your steps. This pedometer does not compete with the Nike feature on other iPods that you will want if you are a serious runner. Some of the other extras available on the iPod Nano are; an alarm, stopwatch, calendar, games, contact list, notepad, and voice memos. The voice over feature is new with this 5th generation iPod Nano and gives the Mp3 player the capability to announce an artist, the song and playlist information in many different languages. This is fun feature and allows you to keep your eyes on the road (or wherever they may be) instead of the iPod screen.
The battery life on my iPod, even though it said 24 hours of music playback, is much greater - at 35 hours. Which is a huge plus if you forget to charge it up.
The iPod Nano can download and play movies off of iTunes with ease. The larger screen makes watching the movie much easier and enjoyable. The images are definitely crisp and clean and worth watching.

The price is very reasonable on this new Nano, considering it has a video camera. It is well worth the price. I have filmed 12 hours of video and uploaded it on my IMAC computer with ease-and put some clips on Youtube- they look great. The Nano Case is very stylish and durable, with the bigger screen (not scratch resistant though). The battery life is very good. The voice recorder play back is very clear, even when recording from 15 feet away. The sound quality while listening to your favorite tunes lives up to all iPod Standards and is very easy to navigate the MP3 menu. It fits in your pocket! It is definitely a fun toy for anyone of any age! I love mine!
