Pros: Holds music, video, and other applications for hours of entertainment.
Cons: iTune software--personal preference, I really dislike it
The Bottom Line: A vast amount of possiblities are calling out to be taken advantage of. There's, honestly, something for everyone. This iPod is easy and fun to use.
rs_telli's Full Review: Apple iPod touch 16 GB (2nd Generation) MP3 Player
I would prefer an iPhone to my iPod touch, but alas I live in one of the four states that lack this capability. So, this is my second iPod touch, third iPod, and fifth mp3 player that I have ever owned and I must say that I have the most fun with the iPod touch. It’s a chic little device that holds not only music but also a world of other applications. I love my music collection but having something that offers me more just adds a little something extra. The possibilities, that I constantly take advantage of, make this well worth the $200 dollars spent.
IPod design If you drop things more often than a bunny rabbit has babies on the discovery channel then this iPod not for you in the least bit. Although there are many accessories that one could buy for their iPod Touch, one hefty fall will damage the it pretty terribly and irreversibly. I dropped my first iPod Touch from about my waist and it started to skip songs. Other than dropping, this device holds up under a lot of use. I constantly turn my iPod Touch on (out of sleep mode), and turn it back to sleep mode (instead of being completely off, because turning the system off is time consuming) and this doesn’t seem to have any effect on it at all. The touch screen has also taken quite the beating from my fingers and yet it still works as if it were brand new. The screen is like any screen on any other device though, it scratches easily. But honestly this can be avoided by just keeping the thin, clear, paper-thin screen protector on it, which doesn’t affect the touch screen. Unfortunately the back does scratch no matter what case I put on it. I just cannot figure out how to leave my iPod Touch unscathed. Oh well, this is only an aesthetic preference. This iPod has wireless Internet capabilities that any other iPod doesn’t. The signal isn’t as strong as a computer’s; however, it’s very good. Easily the iPod Touch, as long as there aren’t any major falls, is very durable.
The main event: Music I hate using iTunes software so much! It’s slow, hard to put album art on it, and ugh!!! Unfortunately iTunes is the only way to play with the music on your iPod on the computer. Buying music straight from iTunes is really easy and so is songs from cds, but I cannot take music off my iPod Touch without syncing it and because I take music off my friend’s music collections (the iPod can only be synced with one computer) I have no back-up for my music collection which is very diverse. Other software can be purchased to take music off any iPod and onto the computer but the one I bought didn’t work on the newer models. The iTunes software does have its benefits though. If the is music one the computer iTunes will take the liberty and transfer all of it to its software. Thank God for no copy and paste work, because that would be so tedious. The 16 GB iPod Touch isn’t one of the iPods that has amazing music capacity, but for the music collector with the mediocre library like me, this is plenty. The thing is that with the iPod Touch, is that there are so many other uses that it’s very easy to run out of room for music. Between the movie, photos, games, and any other applications getting carried away is easily done. Another cool thing with the music it that when listening to it the iPod Touch can be either vertical to scroll through music and possibly movies too, or horizontal, and it doesn’t matter. The balance thingy inside offers this option, which is very convenient. Also I like the change of direction every once in a while. The scrolling in the music is really easy to when on the iPod Touch itself. Just a touch and a flick is all that I ever need, and of course the iPod Touch has the traditional layout that most other mp3 players have, alphabetical in album, artist, or any other music sub-category that you happen to be in. other than the iTunes software, I love my iPod for its music capabilities.
Video on the iPod Touch Now I rarely watch movies on my iPod Touch, but that’s only because I don’t really know how to put any of my DVDs on that stupid iTunes software; however, my friends do buy some television shows from iTunes so I will, on occasion, put them on my iPod Touch. The picture is very small but that’s because of the small screen. I have to say that watching movies on the iPod Touch is that best choice out of all the other iPods, but only because the screen is bigger than the others. When a video is playing the screen is vertical so this kind of gives a widescreen feel. Plus just being able to hold a few movies in your pocket is a bonus. Each movie takes about 1 to 2 gigs so in reality eight movies, give or take a few, is about all that the16 GB iPod Touch is capable of holding, and that is without music, game, and other applications.
Fun Applications Most amazing part of the iPod Touch, excluding the music and video parts, is the various applications that this iPod is capable of having. At first, with the older generation of iPod Touch, the applications were very limited, only internet, maybe weather, and a couple others graced the screen and other than those, the rest of the applications would have to be purchased from iTunes, but that’s not the case with the newer generation. This new one comes with Internet, stocks, mail, safari, a calendar, notes, and a couple others that I cannot remember or pick out of all the applications currently installed. Most all of my applications are free! ITunes offers some free games, like Sudoku and a drawing pad amongst other free apps (sort for applications). Personally my favorite app isn’t a game, though it was still free. Instead it’s a light saber like the ones from Star Wars. It just is a small picture that makes really awesome light saber noises, like off the movie when move. This application would be better on an iPhone though because then, with the phone signals, a battle could ensue. ITunes has plethora of fun games to purchase and give away. So if the music and video doesn’t continue to be entertaining, then the apps are sure to give the continual glee.
In conclusion… The 16 GB iPod Touch is not only for music and video but also opens a can of worms for many other possibilities. Easily it offers many more benefits that outweigh the terrible iTunes software (the only downfall). This is an easy device to take care of, amazing when it comes to a mediocre music collection, the best iPod for movies, and amazing at killing time because if the music and video don’t keep you entertained then the mass of apps offered can. I definitely say that though it’s expensive, the iPod Touch is the best device of its kind to spend money on.
