Think about the word "fun". There are lots of fun things in this world, probably several fun things very close to where you are right now. You could probably make a list of several "fun" things off the top of your head, couldn't you?
Now, imagine you are holding some playing cards, each imprinted with a unique name, place or thing - cards with nouns like: "Library of Congress", "Potato Chips", "Mount Everest", "Volcano", "Helmet", "Screwdriver" and "Hillary Clinton".
Can you match any of THOSE choices to the word "fun"? And even if you could, do you think someone else would agree with your choice?
Apples to Apples is a fun party game for individuals or teams where you choose a noun card from your hand that you feel best matches a descriptive word card chosen at random from hundreds of available cards. Play progresses around the table - in turn, each person will choose a green descriptive card at random for all the other players to try to match with the noun cards in their hands. The person who plays the descriptive card that turn shuffles the face down noun cards and then chooses the noun card s/he feels best matches the descriptive card - the chooser can pick any of the submitted cards for any reason. There's no need for rhyme or reason, the choice is simply made, and the person whose card is chosen wins a point. The person who earns an agreed number of points first (normally, five points) wins the game.
The Apples to Apples Crate Edition contains the original card set from the original Apples to Apples game, as well as the cards from the first two expansions, a total of nearly one thousand cards in all. The Crate Edition gets its name from the wood crate that this version comes in; it also includes two card trays that can hold all the cards, as well as a simple rules page that explains the rules of the game and some ideas for variants to change things up if desired.
Each of the green descriptive word cards includes the word in play as well as three synonyms to help define the word further. The red noun cards each have a phrase, saying or funny caption to further illustrate the person, place or thing on the card.
The game is open to as many styles of game play and interpretation as the players can bring to the experience - I have a habit of trying to tell a story with the submitted noun cards when it's my turn to match the cards to the descriptive card. My son often chooses the most random match, and my daughter enjoys the unintended strange matches that sometimes happen - like "fun" and "Hillary Clinton".
My family really enjoys playing this game together - though we are all avid game players, we all like different types of games. It's rare that we can all agree on a game that we all want to play together. We often play Apples to Apples with friends that come over to the house; many times, we'll play with eight, ten or even twelve people - in our experience, Apples to Apples gets better with more and more people playing at the same time.
Apples to Apples is a great group game, and it can be played for as long or as short a time as you wish. The open-ended game play and the freedom to interpret matches as each player wishes makes Apples to Apples an easy, friendly game that people of any age will enjoy.
Given the choice, "Apples to Apples" is definitely a match for "fun"!
