| WhiteGlove's Full Review: Aqua |
I rarely ever finish my entire lunch - at the middle of the day, I'm just not hungry enough, usually. When I've been at Aqua, though, no matter how much I think "I'll just get a salad or something small" as I walk over for lunch, as soon as I sit down and start eating, I have to finish each bite.
Yes, it is pricey. I don't go there often. But when I do, I am reminded that it is worth nearly every penny. There are many over-priced, over-hyped, under-whelming restaurants in this city, but Aqua stands out as delivering what it promises.
Appetizers - I don't typically get an appetizer with lunch, and if I do, just a salad. The frisee goat cheese salad is wonderful, though. I typically ask for less of the vinaigrette because I love the taste of greens without being masked with dressing, and the vinaigrette on this salad has been a delicious complement to the fresh greens. The goat cheese is two medallions that have been breaded and fried (though definitely many steps up on fried mozzerella I remember as a child). It retains a delightful pungency without overwhelming the rest of the salad.
Entrees - Fish is usually my first choice for lunch and Aqua never disappoints. The chilean sea bass and the tuna stand out in particular in my mind. Fresh, cooked perfectly (or seared in the case of the tuna), with delicious side dishes. Recently, the fava bean puree which came with some swordfish nearly stole the show. It was not a mere after-thought but really had its own wonderful, delicately seasoned taste that brought out some more flavor in the fish.
Desserts - Unfortunately, after eating every bite of my salad and entree, I have not had room for dessert. My eating companions have insisted that they are worth making room for if you can.
Service - I have never had a problem with the service here. All of the wait staff and maitre d's have been cordial, friendly and quite helpful. The restaurant manager can often be seen walking thru the dining room, checking to be sure that everyone is happy and that everything is working smoothly.
It can get a bit noisy at times. I enjoy sitting somewhat off to the side if possible, especially if I am going there for a meeting.
