Pros: One piece, flotation device for kids, kids feel independant and learn swim motions
Cons: Children can tip over, put faces in water. Parents need to supervise closely
I am going to admit my dark secret here...I did not choose this item only for safety...I chose the Aqua Leisure Deluxe Tot Trainer because it was cute! Don't shoot me yet! I knew nothing of these items but my daughter had outgrown her little floaty toy and needed something to help her float. My arms would give out after an hour in the pool so she needed something to hold her up while allowing her to float around for long periods of time. At the time she was enrolled in swim lessons and would want to stay after and play in the pool. So when I went into stores looking for something...I really did not know what...it was a blind choice. I only chose from the cute-ness factor! The other brands and models looked really bulky and uncomfortable.
My daughter balked at me letting her go with it on at first. She was used to being in a larger floating device or wrapped around my neck tightly. The occupational therapists and I worked with her for a month before she felt comfortable being alone in it. I know this is a trainer to help children learn to swim and learn the motions to swim (the therapists loved it!) but I felt uncomfortable with her being too far away from me in it. It is rather odd...the inner tube part of the suit is high up almost right under the child's underarms. Seems like it would be around the waist! So when my daughter was in the water and I let her go, she would sink down and I felt her nose and mouth were too close to the water. Also she seemed to bobble and land face down in the water....if she leaned to much forward.. The inner tube would prevent her from sinking but not from her face going underwater. She had to lean herself back up. It was really scary for me. It did give her confidence in the water after a while and she eventually has learned how to use only an inner tube as other children without going through the hole in the middle.
This is a full swimsuit, one piece. It has an inner tube connected to the suit right almost underneath the child's armpits. I did not like that my daughter was only wearing this and not her very cute swimsuits I had bought just for swimming but did enjoy a one piece suit and inner tube combo to put her in. This has no ties but slips on the child. It comes in different colors at different stores. We found ours at a local Walmart. You will see a small logo on the upper left side saying it is a Aqua Leisure Deluxe Tot Trainer suit.
The inner tube does not move up or down, it is sewn in to stay in place on the suit. It is very sturdy and lasted years without damage or holes. Recommended for ages 2-4 years old. Parents should stay close by as children can still put their heads underwater by tipping too far. It will hold a child's head and upper body out of the water only if the child sits straight up. If they reach for a pool toy, they could accidentally fall forward putting their face in the water and could need assistance righting themselves. We were able to blow up the inner tube without a pump each time and it never deflated in the water. The material is sleek, slippery, and stretchy....perfect for slipping onto squirmy bodies.
I would recommend this item but with caution to parents not to let child out of your sight or reach with it on. Small children may need assistance if they fall forward and have their face underwater. We did enjoy this item and had lots of fun. My daughter felt more independant and more like she was swimming just as the big kids!
