A poor skimmer.

Written: Feb 08 '02
Pros:An easy to use, quite skimmer
Cons:Horribly inefficient and not suitable for use in any but the smallest aquariums
The Bottom Line: Don't be fooled by the box. This skimmer is a poor choice for any system when compared to the other skimmers out there.

This is a poor skimmer when compared to other models out there. It is hard to clean and does a poor job of removing proteins from the water column. When compared to a Turboflotor 750 or a CPR Bak Pak this skimmer just doesn’t work. While either of the other two skimmers cost quite a bit more they are well worth the money. Both are venturi style skimmers and remove much more waste.

The SeaClone is quite and does include a very nice power head. It is easy to setup and adjust. Unlike the Turboflotor it is not affected by the water level in the aquarium. I would honestly do the homework and spend the extra money on a good skimmer.

After running this skimmer for a year I tried a CPR Bak Pak and was amazed to see how much more was skimmed from my tank. Despite the fact that the CPR Bak Pak is only rated to 60 gallons it made a vast difference in the water in my 80 Gallon tank. The SeaClone is supposedly rated to 100 gallons but fails to work half as well as a skimmer that is only rated to 60 gallons.

For more information on protein skimmers go to http://www.wetwebmedia.com/MarIndInd.htm and read the FAQs on protein skimmers.

Protein skimmers should maximize the time the water and the bubbles have to interact. This skimmer does the exact opposite. The "cyclone" in the tube looks cool but it actually hurts the particlulate transfer from the water. There just isn't enough reaction time for this filter to be effective. It also leaks lots of little bubbles out into the tank. These bubbles can clog a fishes gills and kill them.

In short, this skimmer is crap. For the money you can buy yourself a much nicer air stone driven skimmer. For a bit more you can buy a great venturi skimmer. The only plus to this skimmer: the Maxi-Jet power head and the ease of use.
