| mortalcoil's Full Review: Arc'Teryx Maverick AR Jacket - Mens |
Arc'Teryx has in a fairly short time (the company began in 1991) established itself as a leading manufacturer of premium outdoor equipment and clothing, employing innovative materials and construction techniques and manufacturing most of its products in British Columbia. Whether being made in Canada accounts for the very high quality of their garments, it certainly increases labor costs compared to other manufacturers.
Arc'Teryx is best known for technical clothing; insulated jackets, softshells, fleece sweaters, ski pants, etc. The Maverick jacket is a highly refined version of a lightweight fleece zip-up; whether all the refinements justify the cost difference between it and a $50 fleece sweater may be debatable, but here are a few:
- The fabric is a "woven" fleece with a texture on the outside resembling cotton knit. This creates a neater appearance and reduces pilling. The fabric is also somewhat more windproof than standard fleece.
- Snug fit. The jacket is constructed of numerous panels, including underarm gussets, allowing a more anatomical fit and easy layering.
- Concealed waist drawcord; the ends of the drawcord are hidden inside the front pockets.
- Bulk-free pockets; the front pockets are backed by a thin mesh, rather than an additional layer of fleece. Besides reducing bulk, this allows better ventilation if you like to keep your hands in them.
While a lot of clothing in the line is too technical-looking for everyday wear, the Maverick jacket is understated, supremely comfortable, and about as elegant as a fleece sweater can be.
