Every year, I wait impatiently for the holiday season, when I can get the Archway Holiday cookies. They really are something very special.

NOTE: This item is listed as "stripped", but it is actually "striped", with one "p".

Macaroons can be made with almonds or coconut. I like the coconut. The other main ingredient is eggs. Oh, yes, and they also have lots of sugar. Archway does not list eggs in their ingredients, only the egg whites.

The Archway brand is owned by the same company as Mother’s Cookies (Specialty Foods Corporation of Deerfield, Illinois) and made by Archway & Mother’s Cookie Company, Inc.

The Mother’s brand macaroons are available year round, but they are really sugar cookies with some shredded coconut added, but the Archway brand is almost the real thing. It is not generally available during most of the year. Wah!

Product

These soft little mounds of delightful shredded coconut are made with coconut, sugar, vegetable shortening (partially hydrogenated coconut and palm kernel oils), corny syrup, potato starch, egg whites and a bunch of other stuff.

The chocolate stripes are made from cocoa (processed with alkali), soybean lecithin, sugar and lots of other stuff.

The “other stuff” includes flavors, colors and preservatives.

Archway cookies were originally made by the Swanson family and called Swanson Home Style Cookies when they started their company in 1936. The Swansons focused no soft cookies, which have a shorter shelf life than hard cookies, because consumers perceive soft cookies as closer to homemade.
I was a little hesitant about buying Archway cookies since the 2004 recall when glass fragments were found in some Archway Holiday Cashew Nougat Cookies. However, the company did the right thing, and no other Archway Cookies brand products were in the voluntary recall.

These macaroons were tasty, safe to eat and really good.

Nutrition

Actually, these macaroons are not as bad as some cookies, but they certainly are not healthful.
One serving is one cookie (23 grams). There are 6 grams of fat, including 5 grams of saturated fat. The cookies have no cholesterol and only 40 milligrams of sodium. There are 14 grams of carbs and 11 grams of sugar.
Let’s face it, we do not eat cookies of our health, unless you consider a health bar a cookie. I do not.

Package

These holiday treats, which are mainly available in November and December, come in a big bag or a little box. I got the box. It is a light cardboard box with a divider down the middle the long way, wrapped in cellophane. Once you open it, you need to find a way to either seal the box with plastic wrap or put the cookies into a plastic container, to keep the cookies soft and moist.

Of course, you could solve the freshness problem by eating them all in one sitting.

The big bag is not re-sealable, either.
The box contains 16 cookies that weigh 13 ounces (369 grams).
