Lovely Suite, Great Location, but Pricey

Written: Jun 24 '06
Pros:Location, decor, room was enormous (king suite), comfortable bed, nice staff
Cons:pricey room and food, no locks on internal doors
The Bottom Line: Nice large suites with nice views in a nicely located boutique hotel - what more could you want? Very Nice.

We just spent four nights at the Argonaut on Fisherman's Wharf, and it exceeded all of our expectations. The room (a king suite) was bigger than a NYC one-bedroom. We enjoyed the in-room dining table for several meals, esp. breakfast from the Starbucks next door. The decor was fresh and bright. We never had a problem sleeping, or with noise from the street or other rooms. The room windows are very large and crank open for ventilation. One nit was that the pocket doors to both the bedroom and bathroom do not lock, though they did close snugly.

Even though the hotel was booked solid, the staff were all very accommodating to me and my family members. They were even able to extend our stay one night in the same room, though we did have to wait until the last minute before they were able to do so.

The room was equipped with two large Sony flat screen TVs, with DVD, Nintendo 64 and internet access built in. The king size bed was very comfortable, as was the jacuzzi bathtub. Our room easily accommodated a roll away bed and a crib for our baby. This room is so big you could sleep ten comfortably, if the hotel would permit it.

Our second floor room had a corner view, looking over nearby buildings at the Golden Gate and Alcatraz. The location was perfect for our family vacation, with lots of activities locally. Getting out of the area usually involved riding the vintage trolleys on the "F" Muni line which starts a couple of blocks away, which was fun, but they were often very crowded. The cable car terminus next door also came in handy.

The downside? The room is not cheap, at ~$550, and the room service, breakfast and dinners at the hotel restaurant are rather expensive. We bit the bullet on room cost, and chose to eat elsewhere most of the time.
