| kungfulu2's Full Review: Armour evo V-25 Irons |
For years, the Tommy Armour Company had relied on the Tommy Armour 845 iron as its flagship. You would see the 845 being played by low and high-handicappers alike. Many golfers, however, complained of the lack of playablility in the midsized irons. Armour, relying on the latest club-making technology, has introduced the 845 evov-25 forged iron. It is a club designed specifically for the better golfer, using a forged blade rather than the customary cavity back.
The evo technology applied to these forged blades provides perimeter weighting on off-center hits and more consistent ball flight. As the clubs progress from longer to shorter irons, they minimize the cavity and reduce the perimeter weighting. This feature is supposed to provide a consistent ball flight with the long irons, more control with the mid and low irons, and more workability with the wedges.
The clubs are absolutely beautiful at address; from the grip right down to the club head. The evov-25's have a very comfortable velvet Golf Pride Grip. Also, the clubs use a True Temper Dynamic Gold Shaft, providing great feel. All of these features add up to the 845 evov-25 being a great club; if you can hit them, that is.
The Tommy Armour's are designed specifically for the lower handicapped golfer, regardless of how hittable they seem to be. The blades, combined with the lack of offset require the golfer to be very consistent in his/her swing and ball flight. If you aren't a low handicapper (I'm a twelve), you will receive absolutely no pleasure in hitting these irons. A lack of distance and an abundance of shots that are high and right will be commonplace with these clubs. It is unfortunate, for there are many other clubs on the market that are designed for the low handicapper; but provide greater feedback for the average golfer.
If you are seriously in the market for a club like the 845 evov-25, I would suggest trying out the new Titleist 990 or 962. Although those clubs are designed for the better golfer, they are great for the mid handicapper. The Tommy Armour 845 evov-25 Forged Iron is great for the more advanced golfer that is looking for a club that provides great playability from all situations. For the rest of us, however, a club that has more offset and a greater cavity in the long irons would be more ideal. Despite the clubs' flaws, it's hard to deny that they sure look good; regardless of who's bag they're in!
