pantazis5's Full Review: Marc Tolon Brown - Arthur's Nose
Arthur is a character that most of us with children will be able to recognize. But, Arthur's Nose, is very different than the Arthur we recognize! This book depicts an aardvark that looks like an aardvark! Arthur the Aardvark does not like his long nose! His friends make fun of him and he is frustrated with the way he looks. He goes to a doctor, a rhinologist for a new nose. He tries on many different noses and in the end he keeps his own!
He decides that his nose is his and it is what makes him unique. We see Arthur on PBS with his own show. But he began as this long nosed aardvark. This is Arthur in the first grade. (Most stories we read have him the the third grade). The other animals in the story are not as well depicted either. They are more lifelike, and in the series the newer pictures take on a more humanlike appearance.
This Arthur adventure has very few words on each page, it is for younger beginning readers.
This book is a 25 anniversary edition. It is the first of the Arthur stories and it really shows how far Arthur has come. The book was not as well illustrated as the newer Arthur stories. However, we can see the beginning of the illustrations. If you look you can see Arthur's sister almost looks like she looks in the next books. In this story she is not named.
This story is an interesting beginning to the Arthur that we know and love. The illustrations are nothing like the newer books. The Arthur that we see today, does not have a long nose. He changed his nose! Even though he decided not to change his nose, he ended up doing it! I think this is quite confusing to children. As a story it is very good and teaches children that it is ok to be different, and unique and that our family attributes are important. Unfortunately, the fact that Arthur's nose did change in subsequent books, it kind of defeats the purpose of this story. At first glance most people would not recognize that this is Arthur. The original with the long nose!
This limited anniversary edition of the very first Arthur book includes four new pages of fun facts, a letter from Marc Brown on how his characters be...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
