Asher's Sugar-Free Milk Chocolate Bar - High in calories, fat, and after-taste. Yuck!
Written: Nov 15 '10 (Updated Nov 27 '10)
Pros:Ummm... it's sugar-free.
Cons:It doesn't taste too good.
The Bottom Line: There are many companies that make delicious sugar-free products. Asher's makes a lot of varieties that I enjoy. But skip this one.
I don't eat a lot of sugar. But that doesn't mean that I don't have a sweet tooth, or that I don't crave chocolate. So, I eat sugar-free chocolates. Specifically, the brand I've been exploring lately is Asher's.
Asher's makes a lot of varieties of sugar-free chocolates. But mostly I like their bars. Each bar is 1.65 oz. and separates easily into four rectangles approximately 1" by 1.25". I like that the bars separate easily - it makes it easy for me to eat half the bar at a time.
This review is for their Milk Chocolate Bar. Now, let me state first off, that in general I prefer dark chocolate to milk chocolate. I prefer the less-sweet, smoky flavor of a dark chocolate to a milk chocolate. However, there are times when I like to grab a piece of milk chocolate, too. Because sometimes I just want that extra-sweet, creamy goodness of a piece of milk chocolate.
That said, I'm picky. If I'm going to eat milk chocolate, it has to be out-of-this-world delicious, with no artificial-sweetener after-taste. Sadly, Asher's doesn't really fit the bill in this regard. While I enjoy many of their other varieties, the milk chocolate bar is not great. The chocolate is sweet, but there is a definite after-taste. For certain, if you're used to eating regular chocolate, with sugar, this item will not appeal to you in the least. And frankly, even if you are used to candies made with artificial sweeteners, you'll still probably find this one to be nothing more than "average at best".
Each bar is considered one serving, and contains 220 calories and 17g of fat. There are 0mg of sodium and, of course, 0g of sugar, although there are 25g of sugar alcohol. As you can see from the calories and fat, in this case, sugar-free does not mean "diet food".
The ingredients are Milk Chocolate Flavored Sugar Free Coating (Maltitol, Cocoa Butter, Chocolate Liquor, Calcium Caseinate, Milk Fat, Soya Lecithin, Natural and Artificial Flavor)
I like the fact that they only used one artificial sweetener (Maltitol) rather than an entire cocktail of them. But, like any product made with these sugar alcohols, make sure you know how your system will react, before eating too much in any one sitting.
I like other Asher's products, but this one doesn't do it for me. There's nothing spectacular about the chocolate, it leaves an after-taste, and it's high in fat and calories. Skip it.
