| mrb129's Full Review: Asics GT-2070 WoMens Running Shoe |
Last year as a member of my school's track team, I was plagued with a number of foot ailments; it seemed like a new one was cropping up nearly every week. If it wasn't my arches, it was the huge blisters or the shin splints, all caused by the half-dozen mile workouts I was undergoing every day. I was in dire need of new shoes, it seemed.
After retiring my trusted adidas trail shoes, I headed down to Luke's Locker, a running store in Dallas and Fort Worth whose employees are especially knowledgeable on shoes and always recommend shoes to fit your specific foot. The salesman told me to get some Asics GT-2070s based on his evaluation of my particular feet (very long and skinny with uber-high arches).
If you are looking for a trendy running shoe, I doubt you would pick up the Asics GT-2070s on your own. I am also guilty of all too often buying running shoes for their look (which in reality probably caused my foot injuries). In fact, I had never owned any Asics before these and probably wouldn't have ever picked up a pair if the man at Luke's hadn't specifically recommended them. But I have been satisfied with them so far.
Since there is no picture of the shoe and I am doubtful that you are actually going to buy some shoes without seeing them, you can check out one color scheme at http://www.eastbay.com/catalog/productdetail.cfm?TID=5555-34040319190134190787974-0&module=home&action=focusSearch&supercat=home&model_nbr=39563&sku=2521533&id=60250&mvp=brand&sport=all&banner=.
Mine are carolina blue/navy/maroon trim but white overall shoe. They are a generic looking running shoe that doesn't really stand out style-wise, but what it lacks in trendiness the GT-2070 makes up for in cushion and structure. The shoe is mainly a combination of leather and mesh which helps the feet breathe under extreme conditions. However, because they are mesh, the GT-2070s will get your feet wet in the rain.
This shoe is specifically built for the runner who wants support and cushioning. They have numerous high-tech cushioning systems (DuoSole, DuroSponge, Asymmetrical CMEVA midsole, etc. if the technical names mean anything to you) that have kept me comfortable mile after mile. Not that I was walking on pillows, but pretty damn close. The sole of the shoe is non-marking so it is safe for a gym floor, but it is still tough enough that you can use your GT-2070s when braving a hike or all-terrain run. (I don't know if I'd use them rock-climbing though.)
One of my other problems I had suffered from with the other shoes was poor arch support. Through years of extensive ballet training I have ultra-high arches that can cause great pain if they are not supported. Some people suggest Dr. Scholls or comparable insoles but those had never really been all that successful for me, so I looked for arch support as a key factor in my new shoes. These Asics have a Duo-Truss system (whose name itself means little to me actually) in the shoe that provides balanced arch support. These shoes also have Gel, which is Asics's version of the Nike Air or New Balance Abzorb product. Basically it just helps even more with cushioning and is becoming almost generic on their models of shoes.
If you are a runner with a tendency to pronate, this shoe is also a good bet for you. The DuoMax in the GT-2070s help reduce the pronation of runners. Although this was not a problem for me I know that it is for all too many people. (For those of you who do not know, pronation is the condition that occurs when someone walks putting pressure on the inside regions of their feet.)
These shoes have amazing durability; they have lasted through almost anything and still maintain their high level of support and cushioning. On many poorer quality running shoes, the toe will start to unglue and flap around, but the toe of the Asics GT-2070 has stayed held strong even after several hundred miles of wear. I recommend these functional shoes to a runner who is specifically looking for good support and cushioning and an enemy against pronation. Happy running and happy 4th.
