I'm a woman boxer with very small feet. Finding boxing shoes is a big challenge for me. I like boxing shoes with good side support, yet they must be flexible and breathable. The Asics Split Second 7 is perfect for me.
~ Product Description
The Asics Split Second 7 Shoe is marketed for men, but certainly is appropriate for women or youth. ASICS tells us this split-sole wrestling shoe is ideal for wrestlers of all levels. Although boxing isn't mentioned, my trainer suggested wrestling shoes if boxing shoes or boots weren't easy to find. The two-piece sole allows your forefoot and heel to work more independently and offers excellent foot flexibility. The Version 7 is lighter weight than its predecessor 6 model. The open mesh upper allows for excellent comfort and breathability.
It weighs in at a nice, lightweight 8.7 oz. There is an extended sole wrap that provides traction a little higher up the sides than some models.
One really cool feature that I LOVE is the integrated lace cover, which does comply with wrestling regulations. It is basically a hook and loop style cover that contains the laces so they aren't flying around or apt to become untied.
This model comes in a few different color choices, but I have the black/gray/neon blue, which looks very stylish.
The other good thing is this comes in a large range of sizes, I believe as small as 4 up to at least 13. Those are men's sizes. The prices varies from about $53 to $65, so check around.
~ My Experience
When I first put on the Asics Split Second 7 I was in love. It fit like a glove, was light as a feather, and I loved the super flexible sole. This is important for boxing because you are always on your toes. I did notice the size runs a little small, so I would suggest trying on a pair before purchasing. Also, the width seemed a little narrow, but I have very narrow feet so that is good for me.
I love the just-above-the-ankle height. It's not a low-top, but it's not a boot either. The lace cover is fabulous. I'll never have a boxing shoe without some kind of lace cover again, because occasionally my shoe would come untied, always at the most inopportune moment. No more with my new Asics!
The split sole is truly that; the rubber traction sole is only on the heel and forefoot, with just the nubuck-like material at the arch. The tongue is padded well and very comfortable. The outside is breathable mesh and suede-leather combo in a pleasing design. The laces are thick and heavy duty, and should last a long time. They are also plenty long.
In the gym, on mats, and in the ring, these shoes provide JUST the right amount of traction, even on a damp gym surface, yet don't grab or stick and allow for smooth pivoting. They are very flat, as boxing and wrestling shoes should be.
I've done intense boxing workouts with these shoes, including jump rope, heavy bag work, and sparring in the ring. They provide good side foot support, light ankle support, are light and flexible, and breathe well.
And I've gotten several compliments on how cool my shoes are ;)
~ Final Thoughts
Asics Split Second 7 Shoes are great wrestling or boxing shoes for men, women or youth, and come in a wide range of sizes. The split sole allows for great flexibility, and these shoes breathe well. The lace cover is a huge plus. Highly recommended.
