thefranchise's Full Review: Astro-Creep: 2000 by White Zombie
I bought this album the day it was released, and having already owned "La Sexorcisto Vol 1", their previous album, I kind of had an inkling what to expect; stoner metal filled with horror movie samples and some cool guitar riffs. What I got was a different story.
Sure, we have the movie samples, and killer riffs, but this album is alot more "together"; production is better, the songs are catchier, and theres less filler than the previous album.
The album starts off on the high tempo, "Electric Head Pt1", which is a very catchy, rocky number; with Zombie's gravel-throated lyrics coarsing throughout. The guitar work is heavy and compliment Zombies vocals perfectly.
Next we have "Supercharger Heaven", one of the biggest tracks on the album, as it featured on the Judge Dredd soundtrack. Another hi-tempo number, which speeds through more horror rock and compliments the first song perfectly.
Then we have "Real Solution #9", which cools the tempo down a bit and is an excellent, well put together track with garish samples throughout. A classic from start to finish.
Next we have "Creature Of The Wheel"; one of the most interesting and "weird" songs on the album. The vocal work is excellent, and is certainly one of the best tracks on the album.
Next we have "Electric Head pt.2", which although sounds nothing like the first track; is still very good, with a certain 70's vibe at the very start, and some very groovy guitar riffs throughout.
Next we have "Grease Paint And Monkey Brains" which starts off with a very sinister; almost carnival like intro, which then slows to a snails pace and the sludge begins. While not; in my opinion, an excellent track, I deem it to be the weakest on the album.
Next, "I, Zombie", a perinnial fan favourite, and its not hard to see why. This track has something very fast and to the point about it, and is a great prelude to the gem of this album; "More Human Than Human".
Probably the biggest song on the album, it was featured on "The Cable Guy" movie, and is certainly my favourite. Layering and an incredible infecious beat to the song makes this a classic. Snarling vocals, thumping guitar riffs, and the ability to make the listener stand up and rock! From the incredible intro to the song, to the very last second; this, in my opinion is one of Zombie's finest tracks.
Next we have the absurdly "El Phantasmo And The Chicken Run Blast O Rama" which also, is a great track. A very catchy intro, and superb guitar work make this another stand out track.
Another one of my favourites is "Blur The Technicolor". A complex song, it combines all the elements which made White Zombie such a great band.
Finally, we have "Blood, Milk and Sky", a rather suberb wrap-up song to the album, with a strange tribal drum beat, and absolutely *CRUNCHING* guitars.
From the up-beat start to the quirky and menacing end, this album is a masterpiece in every since of the word. A fine album from a fine band, and its fitting that White Zombie split while at their peak - Astro Creep is a testament to this.
There was also a remix album of this released called "Super Sexy Swingin' Sounds" which is worth a look in as it gives you a new spin on the album and is infecious and great in its own right.
*PS* After the last song fades out, leave your player running as there is a secret bit at the very end of the cd.
