xr3e's Full Review: Astro-Creep: 2000 by White Zombie
Several different line-up changes and ten years after their formation, the seeds were planted for the end of White Zombie, one of the most influential bands of the 80's and 90's. Astro Creep 2000: Songs of Love, Destruction and Other Synthetic Delusions of the Electric Head (Astro Creep for short) was the band's incredible swan song.
After about seven years of playing and conquering the underground scene and altering their sound continuously from punk to metal, White Zombie gained mainstream success with Thunder Kiss '65, the first single off of their 1992 major record label debut La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Vol. 1. After a grueling two-year tour promoting the album, White Zombie started work on Astro Creep (though some of the songs from this album were already written during the La Sexorcisto tour, like Blur the Technicolor).
The end result was a new industrial sounding White Zombie that took the world by storm the moment their first single More Human Than Human got out to the masses in 1995. The band was seemingly unstoppable and sales for Astro Creep were sky rocketting, resulting in the release of a subsequent remix album and the band appearing on numerous soundtracks. After years, White Zombie was finally being recognised and appreciated on the scale it deserved.
The band toured endlessly promoting Astro Creep. This was the first step to the ending of White Zombie. The ceaseless touring got to the band members and by the end of the tour, some of them were not even talking to each other. White Zombie eventually broke up much to the dismay of old and new fans alike.
But White Zombie, unlike many bands out there now, ended at it's peak. Astro Creep is a mind blowing album from start to finish (including the hidden track). All the tracks are exceptional and of great diversity not only in terms of sound (lead singer Rob Zombie used a Mighty Morphin Power Rangers walkie talkie for the voice effects on the track Real Solution #9), but also in terms of concept (the single More Human Than Human is a tribute to the cyberpunk classic Blade Runner). And to add a spectacular visual to the audio, the art of the album (done entirely by Rob Zombie) fits the mood completely.
Till this day, Astro Creep has still outsold Marilyn Manson's Antichrist Superstar and Hole's Celebrity Skin combined and is recognised by many as the perfect ending to the band's rich history.
If you loved Astro Creep, I suggest checking out Rob Zombie's solo debut Hellbilly Deluxe as well as any of the band's older outings to see how they have evolved over the years.
