Summer Samba (Reply to this comment)
by solmundi
The song "So Nice (Summer Samba)" on this CD with organist Walter Wanderley is one of my favorite recordings. The album from which it comes is pretty good, too. Wanderley was also from Brazil, and I think his musicianship carries the song much more than Astrud does. Nice review!

It was hard (Reply to this comment)

to find something that you HADN'T heard! I scanned your voluminous list of music reviews, and my favorite styles, rock, alternative, even heavy metal had already been done! I had no choice but to go to the stuff I mellow out with. I thought your review was great. Although I like it better than you did, I tend to use it to play in the background too, when I just want to relax.
On the comment below me, yeah STAN GETZ is awesome, I have a lot of great SAX in my collection, and Stan is the man! It was actually the Gilberto/Getz album that I discovered both bossa nova and Stan Getz!

Excellent review (Reply to this comment)

Although it may not be in your specific area of expertise, I think you did an excellent job here. I saw Ms. G in person in NYC several years ago and was, unfortunately, underwhelmed. The success of "The Girl" was, to me, due more to the playing of Stan Getz. Astrid's voice always lacked variety to me. For a better example of Bossa Nova singing, you might listen to Tania Marie who knocks me out.

rock over Ipanema, rock on, Corcovado (Reply to this comment)

I'm glad that being too deaf to pay attention to Astrud Gilberto isn't some trait i'm lost with all by myself. (It is part of my brain's "Do Not Process Anything That Looks Like Jazz" policy, one instituted many years ago without consulting me.) She has a very nice voice, i knew that; she uses many different rhythms, i'm willing to trust you on; her music is a heckuva lot better than Wesley Willis's, i don't doubt for a moment. I'm still happy i got Wesley Willis instead, and you reviewed bravely and well.
cheers,
- Brian

Yeahhhhh...I think I'd be totally lost as to how to write a review on this, even if I were to love it.
This is why I'm glad other people seem to get this stuff year after year.
