| jo.com's Full Review: Atkins Diet Shake Mix |
I have tried the Atkins diet (or WOE-way of eating- as the Atkids call it *) many times off and on in the past year.
Before this I always drank a meal replacement shake after my workout. It was either MetRx or Myoplex, both of which are delicious. They are also high in carbohydrates and off limits on Atkins. The Atkins Shake Mix only has 1 gram of carbohydrates per serving; 170 calories and 8 grams of fat. It also has a horrible taste!
The product comes in a 16-ounce canister costing $23.99 and makes 11 servings. That is about $2.20 a serving an average price for a protein bar will get you and actually, in my opinion, more filling than a bar.
I need to tell you something else: This product has 8 grams of fat. It doesnt sound like much. In fact, for the Atkins WOE fat doesnt matter, but in case it does, I want you to know this formula. Take the number of fat grams, in this case 8 and multiply it by 9 (why 9? Because a gram of fat has 9 calories). We now have 72. We want to divide that by the number of calories in the product. In this case 170. We get approximately 42%. That means that this product is almost ½ fat! Thats a lot. But again, for Atkids, it doesnt matter because they dont count fat grams. I just think it is a nifty formula for you to know.
Not only does it have a horrible taste but also it doesnt mix well. The instructions specifically say mix 2 scoops of powder with 8 ounces of water in a glass or shaker cup (for thicker shake add less water). NO BLENDER REQUIRED. Right! WRONG.
I have a very good Tupperware shaker. Shakers dont come any better and believe me this stuff does not mix. Even in a blender it doesnt mix well (but that could be my blender *). I have tried to shake it many different ways. I put some of the powder in, then water, then more powder; or I put water in then the powder.
Nothing gets the clumps out. So here I am after a great workout, hungry and wanting a MRP (meal replacement) on my way home (I have a 20-25 minute drive) and what I get are clumps of powder.
The shake comes in different flavors. Currently I have the Vanilla; Ive also tried the chocolate. Basically they both taste the same.
One additional problem for this shake is the Atkins diet itself. Because it is a low carbohydrate one, you cant add milk (I like soymilk) or fruit) making it impossible to even disguise the disgusting taste.
It is full of good things: a good percentage of vitamins, it has no sugar; it contains egg whites and whey protein. A sample of these nutrients follows and you can see they are a decent percentage.
Vitamin A 40% (these are percent of daily values)
Vitamin C 60%
Calcium 70%
Vitamin B6 60%
Niacin 100%
If I were going to take those vitamins, Id rather take them in supplement form than drink the Atkins shake to get them. I will finish off this canister, but since Im not on Atkins I can add soymilk and strawberries which will make it palatable. It will still be clumpy but at least it will taste better. Maybe Ill just top it off with whipped cream, nuts and a cherry, that might solve the problem.
