| BeastieGirl's Full Review: Atkins Diet Shake Mix |
I bought this shake mix after reading the Protein Power Plan because I wanted to increase the amount of protein that I was consuming without adding on a lot of carbohydrates. I thought I hit the jackpot when I found the Atkins shake mix.
In retrospect, I think it’s actually the other way around- Atkins hit the jackpot when I found this mix. At almost twenty dollars a container, this is not your average shake. In one canister, you can make eleven 8 oz. Shakes. It’s fairly expensive, but as a breakfast shake, it’s really the only low-carb drink out there.
The taste itself is not that bad. I’m just a vanilla kind of person, so I was glad that was an option, but chocolate and cappucino flavors are also available. It doesn’t have a chalky aftertaste like some drink mixes do- in fact, I think the aftertaste is better than the initial taste. Now I won’t tell you that I prefer the taste over a good old-fashioned milkshake, but all told, one of these shakes doesn’t come close to being the worst tastes I’ve ever had.
In only 8 oz., there are only 170 calories but 23 grams of protein (much more than 2 eggs and bacon have) and it’s fairly low in fat (compared to the aforementioned eggs and bacon) with 8 fat grams. And the fact that is is only 8 ounces means that even if you don’t like the taste, you can drink it down quickly in only a few gulps.
Now for the VERY big con:
The powder is very fine and difficult to mix. Supposedly you don’t need a blender, but I’m not so sure. Anyhow, a small whisk will serve you well if you don’t want to blend it. Even with a whisk or blender though, there is the potential to get clumps of power in the shake- this to me is very unpleasant. I usually have a fair amount of the power clumped at the bottom and even using a fork to try and mix it up more, I have been unsuccessful so far.
I have yet to come up with a good solution to this problem, but due to the fact that this is a one-of-a-kind product, I guess I’ll just have to keep trying.
All in all, if you are trying to increase you protein intake and/or following one of the new low carb/high protein diets, this is an excellent aide. It's quick and easy to make (clumping aside) and the taste is moderately okay.
