When it comes to bargain hunting I am not store loyal - if CVS has something for .50 less than Rite Aid - guess where I am going. When I had to pick up some items at CVS I saw the sale tag on a few of the Atkins snack items and I was all over them. With the company in financial trouble and their future unclear some store might be putting certain items on sale to try to get rid of them. What struck me as odd is that this was the only Atkins candy item that was on sale - 50% off to be exact. They had some of the chips but I resisted the temptation and stuck with the peanut butter cups. Having already had them in the past I knew that they tasted good, satisfied my craving for chocolate and wouldnt knock me out of ketosis if I only had one a day. Sadly these are so freakin good that its hard to behave with these in the house. If you are trying to stick to a diet or just live a low carb lifestyle but want to have a sweet treat around - this is one of the best choices.
Atkins Endulge Peanut Butter Cups
You get three small half dollar sized peanut butter cups per 1.2 ounce package and while that might not sound like a lot, when you are on a diet it is a slice of heaven. The nice thing about these is that they are in this little plastic tray so you have to pop them out of it; they dont slide around inside the wrapper and if you only want to eat one and save the other two for later, you can slide the tray back into the wrapper. There is a word of warning that comes with this and all Atkins treat bars like this - if you eat too many you will end up paying for it. The sugar alcohol can have a laxative effect on you if you consume too much at one time. Atkins suggests that if you are sensitive to sugar alcohol you should limit your intake to one to two servings a day.
The taste of these is what really gets to me. The creamy peanut butter with the chocolate coating tastes a lot like a Reeces Peanut Butter Cup but this is on a smaller scale so you really have to eat it slowly to get the full effect of it. Since there is less peanut butter and chocolate per cup [but there are three of them] you might be tempted to have two packages - dont. That will get you started on a bad habit that is hard to break. These are supposed to be used as snacks, not meals. There is a pleasant after taste - nothing chalky or offensive but just the nice mixture of chocolate and peanut butter. If you want to really enjoy these for a while, pop them in the freezer then eat them. It takes you longer to get through it, you enjoy it more and your cravings are satisfied. You get two treats in one with this - the peanut butter is creamy and smooth and the chocolate is rich and actually tastes like real chocolate.

Price
Normally these sell for about $1.50 a package; some places carry them for $1.29 and the trendy places for as much as $1.75. CVS was selling them for .75 cents which was a good deal. Half off the regular price makes it something that I can live with and yes indeed, I did stock up on them. Sometimes people have a hard time understanding why people will pay such a high price for something so small - taste is one factor but staying on a low carbohydrate diet isnt easy and if sinking a couple of dollars into a product like this helps - then yes, it is most definately worth it. If you like them you can check to see what a box would run you but make sure that you check the expiration date on it so you know you are going to get something that is going to last a while.
The Bottom Line
Considering that I got these half off I am pretty pleased with my big purchase of 22 bars. I had them in the past and really liked them but a buck fifty for one of them always seemed a little high. Even so, when I was having an insane craving Id grab one just so I could avoid going face down in a bowl of M&Ms. These have an incredible taste to them with no bad after taste - something that is pretty rare with these types of snack items. The whole Endulge line is worth checking out if you are doing a low carb diet but be sure to look for in store specials and sales so you can stock up cheap.
