| bought_it_all's Full Review: Atkins Morning Start Breakfast Bars - Apple Crisp |
I feel as though I'm jumping on an already-crowded bandwagon here, but I feel fairly strongly about this product, and want to share with you. If you've read my other review of Atkins Shakes, you already know that I am endeavoring to lose a few pounds through a reduction in carbohydrates. I can only assume that you are too, since you're reading this. I will also state here that no chef am I, and any kitchen assistance is welcome. It is here where meal replacements come in handy. For breakfast, I cannot think of eating eggs, every day, all week. Bacon and sausage are all well and good too, but how much jiggling fat can you really ingest voluntarily? Enough exposition, let's get to the heart of the matter...
Atkins Morning Start Apple Crisp meal bars are one of the three options offered (Chocolate Chip is being released in about 2 weeks). It is designed to satisfy your cravings for breakfast-flavored food when time does not allow you an actual meal. The bar consists mostly of soy nuggets and soy products, and provides the following:
Nutrition:
Calories: 170
Total Fat: 9g (or 14%)
Cholesterol: less than 2mg (or 0%)
Sodium: 70mg (or 3%)
Potassium: 90mg (or 3%)
Net Carbs: 2g
Protein: 11g (or 22%)
...and the usual host of vitamins and minerals.
My Experience:
The bar looks like a yogurt-covered candy bar. This is, of course, an illusion. It is actually a puffed-soy product, covered in a white soy-based sweetened jacket. The flavor of the bar is fairly pleasing -- apples and spice, maybe a little too heavy on the spice. It has a somewhat heavy aroma when directly beneath your nose, and smells a little bit like potpourri. The coating is smooth and tasty, and the bar itself is also fairly palatable. It has no discernible aftertaste, and is satisfying. It doesn't have the weight or texture of the cinnamon bar (I'll review that later), but feels more airy and light. Overall, it's a fairly tasty alternative to cooking.
Price:
A box of five breakfast bars retails for almost $7 in the grocery store. This is pretty steep, and breaks down to about $1.40 per bar. In the grand scheme of things, breakfast at the diner would cost much more than that, so it can be seen as "reasonable." I'd rather go to a resaler though. On Vitaminshoppe.com, the box of five goes for about $4.75. Buying in bulk is advisable, since you're also going to pay for the shipping. Still, it's quite a bit cheaper this way.
Overall, I would endorse this breakfast bar as a good option for Atkins-lovers. It does the job, is low in carbs, doesn't have an aftertaste, and is low-effort. One piece of advice -- have a glass of water or a big mug of coffee with it, since I've found that bits of soy really do enjoy living in your throat, and are sometimes reluctant to leave.
