Can I tell you how excited I was when I spied a box of Atkins Morning Start Breakfast Bars - Creamy Cinnamon Bun?
It can easily be stated that Cinnamon Rolls are a weakness of mine, and when cooked properly a Cinnabon can break down my will power and take me to a dreamy food land. Ahhh, the fragrance... Ooohhh, the taste. But dang it... The Calories and Carb factor!
For a substantial period of time I have been attempting to adhere to a low carb regimen, and in fact have been attempting The South Beach Diet. As you can imagine, Cinnabons aren't a recommended food item.
Considering my adoration for cinnamon buns, and the fact that I am attempting to adhere to a low carb regimen, it isn't surprising that when I spied the box of 5 Atkins Morning Start Breakfast Bars - Creamy Cinnamon Bun for $5.63 (WalMart), I purchased them. I knew that these bars wouldn't taste like a Cinnabon, yet I was expecting a satisfying low carb bar with a delightful cinnamon taste. Atkins Morning Start Breakfast Bars - Creamy Cinnamon Bun are intended as a breakfast bar for those following a low carb regimen. These bars are acceptable for all phases of the Atkins diet, and work well for those following a low-carb regimen. The individual bars are wrapped within a typical foil covering that has the same picture as the main box. The bar itself measures approximately 3 ¼" x 1 ¼" x ½".
After removing the individual wrapping from a breakfast bar, I immediately noticed a pleasing cinnamon aroma. Ahhh I thought, anticipating the first bite. Urgh! The texture was rather gummy and the taste was bland. The coating on the top had a waxy texture. There was a hint of cinnamon taste to the inner portion, but nothing remotely close to a cinnamon bun. I didn't let this detour me from finishing the bar, after-all this was intended as a breakfast replacement. What disturbed me even more than the bland taste, was that after completing the bar a metallic aftertaste took over. This was not my idea of breakfast, but I hesitantly decided that I would try another bar, on a different day, which I did - two more times.
Normally a bar, such as the Atkins Morning Start Breakfast Bars - Creamy Cinnamon Bun would satisfy my hunger, and equate a meal replacement. Although the bar was filling, the unsatisfactory flavor and especially the offensive aftertaste left me craving something else. Even after brushing my teeth I wanted more food. This truly wasn't my idea of a meal replacement.
As mentioned, this bar is intended for those following a low carb lifestyle. This breakfast bar is safe for kids and adults, and if the taste was okay I imagine that athletes would benefit from the 26g of protein (26% daily recommended value based on a 2,000 calorie diet*). Because the bar maintains a low 2 g net carb rate, which has minimum impact on blood sugar*, this bar won't cause the 'crash' factor of bars containing massive sugar. In turn, this equates to a healthy food substance; if only it tasted good.
Now that I have consumed three of the five bars, I honestly cannot recommend the Atkins Morning Start Breakfast Bars - Creamy Cinnamon Bun. If this not a morning start, I'd rather stay in bed!
There are plenty of Atkins products that I do like, but I will not purchase these again, nor will I be eating the other two bars. But as with any food item, tastes vary, and you might want to try them.
