| sshelle's Full Review: Atkins Morning Start Breakfast Bars - Creamy Cinna... |
Once again, I open an Atkins "Creamy" something to find a YELLOW bar looking me in the face. Major unappetizing zing right there. Yuck. I'm thinking white when I think creamy, or maybe cream-colored, but yellow????? Okay, so I bite into it. . . cinnamon, cinnamon, okay, cinnamon, not so bad! Then it hits me! EW! Glycerin again! They went and ruined yet another product with the glycerin!
The first few seconds were great, almost pleasant, and then BAM, chemical-tasting glycerin hits the taste buds and this bar goes down like the rest of the Atkins bars (minus the wonderful treats on the Endulge line, which are glycerin-free). I manage to get the rest of the somewhat dry bar down my throat in order to benefit from the hunger-pang fighting fiber (6g, 24% DV) and 13g (26%DV) of protein. That was the 5th bar in the first and last box of these I'm ever buying. Took me over a month to get them all down. I kept hoping the taste would grow on me. I guess not! What's up with the glycerin!!!?????
The good thing about these bars is that the fiber keeps you full enough to stop any munchies and therefore weight gain crawling back on. If you eat one of these with a low-carb shake (one of the Atkins or the EAS carb control shakes) for breakfast and lunch, you'll make it until the end of the work day without a problem. I used to have to eat in bulk just to feel full, and now I can feel satisfied eating just what I told you, even watching others eat much more. It's a great feeling, and even greater to watch the scales drop weekly. :)
There are only 2 net grams of carbs in Atkins Morning Start Breakfast Bars - Creamy Cinnamon Bun. Although there are 14 grams of carbs, 6g of fiber don't count and 6g of glycerin don't count, because they both have a minimal impact on blood sugar. The 8g of fat (12% DV)is what gives it the taste and energy you burn.
You get a surprising amount of vitamins and minerals eating this bar: 15% of your DV of vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, niacin, and folic acid; and 20% of your calcium and phosphorus. There is less than 2mg (0% DV) cholesterol, only 65mg of sodium (3% DV) and 90mg potassium (3% DV).
Ingredients: protein blend (soy protein isolate, hydrolyzed collagen, calcium/sodium caseinate, whey protein isolate), glycerin, polydextrose, cocoa butter, water, natural coconut oil (non-hydrogenated), cellulose, dicalcium phosphate, olive oil, lecithin, natural and artificial flavor, palm kernel oil, cocoa powder processed with alkali, maltodextrin, guar gum, citric acid, Splenda, mono and diglycerides, potassium phosphate. Nutrition blend: calcium, vitamin A, vitamin C, niacin, vitamin B12, vitamin B1, folic acid, vitamin E.
Manufactured in a facility that uses peanuts and other nuts and seeds. Not to be taken lightly. . .I had a friend that died when something she ate had a touch of peanut oil in it and she didn't have her Epi-pen on her person.
This product, having Splenda in it, shouldn't have the usual artificial sweetener aftertaste (like saccharin or aspartame do). However, the glycerin just kills the taste for me, so the fact that Splenda is in there becomes a moot point. I do wish if they were going to advertise their products as "creamy" that they would a) make the icing WHITE, not yellow and b) make it more moist, so it would be easier to swallow (like you would expect from something "creamy"!!!).
This is okay for a filling fiber source to get you to your next meal if you are on a low-carb diet. If you want "sweet", choose from the Endulge product line. If you want "bulk", so far I've found all glycerine, so find the least of the "evils" and good luck. . . . .
