Pros: Great views of sea life on a Hawaiian reef.
Cons: A little pricey. Boat to/from sub not good for seasickness.
The Bottom Line: I would recomend this activity for those who want to experience undersea life while dry. Very fun and lots of photo ops.

My first Atlantis Submarine ride was on my grandmothers 70th birthday in 1998. My mother, brother, and uncle got terribly sea sick on the ride to and from the submarine, though they felt fine on the actual submarine ride. The sub itself is very smooth. At the time, artificial reefs had just recently been sunk down and the amount of fish around them wasnt spectacular. The Waikiki beaches and reefs have suffered from the millions of tourists it sees every year. However, the state has been taking measures to improve the water life.
Ten years later, I once again navigated the Pacific off Waikiki with the Atlantis Submarine crew, my new husband, and in-laws. No one got sick that time! The artificial reefs had progressed wonderfully in the past ten years and attracted all types of sea life. We saw about six enormous green sea turtles, a couple of reef sharks, a manta ray, some scuba divers, and schools and schools of colorful tropical fish. You can take pictures though they will all have a blue tinge to them. You can fix them up with a program like photo shop if you like. The experience improves with time as these areas are now protected and growing into a fish sanctuary. Each year sees more coral and fish growth. Its a great experience if youd rather see these underwater treasures and wonders close up without getting wet. Otherwise, go rent some scuba gear.
