Pros:it got an award, but I don't think it deserves one.
Cons:Briony, way too much detail
The Bottom Line: Avoid it, long pointless book.
I've read many books, good and bad, but I always managed to finish reading them. I give them a chance just in case it starts out slow and miraculously gets better in the end.
I saw the previews for the movie Atonement and heard it was based on a book. I tend to read books before seeing the movie, so I added it on to my books to be read list. I managed to read this book halfway through and could not finish it. It was the most droll, pompous book I've ever read. I love books, especially books that are romantic and beautiful, everything Atonement is not.
I started reading this book and I instantly hated Briony. She was a controlling, little brat. I could not connect with her. I instantly wanted her to go away. I had absolutely no empathy or any other nice feelings for her besides utter disgust.
The book starts off slow and never really goes anywhere. There is just too much detail in this book about the scenery. It's fine for the author to describe the house so the reader can imagine it in their mind, but don't go into so much detail that you go astray from the main plot. I want to know more about the characters.
I gave the book away because I never saw myself finishing the book. I finally saw the movie a couple of weeks ago and I hate it as well. I guess I should have known, if I didn't like the book, I probably wouldn't like the movie.
