Syntax's Full Review: Audiovox XR9 XM Radio Receiver
Purchase
I purchased this radio as an impulse buy. Circuit City was running this radio on sale for $0 after rebate. Out the door it cost $45.
Features
This radio offers the basic features. 10 Buttons that can be programmed to 30 stations. Docking capability if you purchase additional car or home kits. Audio output for connection to other devices. A remote control, and seperate volume control from the radio. FM transmitter for wireless connection to your existing stereo.
A memory function that records artist names and song names you like (this can be used for a couple things.
1. Take memo of songs you like so you can download them online later.
2. Auto scan for these songs on radio startup and tune to channels playing them.
Missing Features
This is a basic unit. What makes it basic? It has very little time buffer, if you go under a bridge or tunnel it looses signal almost right away. It has no recording function, it is not portable, the brightness of the screen can not be adjusted.
How well does it work?
I've had my radio about 2 weeks now at the time of writing this review. So far Its worked fairly well. Im considering buying a wiring kit for it. I live in a metro area and the radio channels are all taken, I get interferance from CB radios and other things and find myself changing FM channels as I move from one side of town to the other. With the additional FM wiring kit I think I might be able to overcome these interferance problems.
I've used the radio now on sunny clear days, and freezing rainy cold days. It seems to get good reception reguardless of cloud cover, however the manual for this said that some metro areas have radio towers. So I might be recieving radio signal as well as satalite signal.
Overall Opinion
Im so far satisfied with this radio. I do wish the buffer was a little better, and the transmitter was a little stronger to stop interferance on radio channels, but as is Im happy so far. Once I purchase the wiring kit, and an additional docking station for my 2nd car, I think I'll be more than happy with it. Being able to use it by moving just the player portion from car to car.
I would recommend this product to anyone looking to try satellite radio. I wasnt sure I wanted XM radio, and I think this is an affordable way to see if its something your want to buy into.
