Pros: Small, easy to use, good battery life in digital coverage, looks cool
Cons: Headset use can cause speaker problems
The Bottom Line: If you use a headset, this phone is not acceptable because use of the headset will likely break your phone! Otherwise, it's great.

| bruff's Full Review: Audiovox CDM-4000 Cell Phone |
My wife and I signed up with Verizon wireless (2 contracts) in the Summer of 2000 after moving back to the Kansas City area. We were offered a choice between the Audiovox and a larger Qualcomm phone with a shorter battery life. We made the easy choice and both picked the Audiovox. The service rep. entered our names to display on the screen so that we could tell the otherwise identical phones apart.
The phones have worked very well overall. As long as you stay in a digital coverage area, the sound quality is good, and the battery life is very good. The lithium-ion battery does not seem to have developed any memory in the six months that we've had the phones. Performance in an analog area is acceptable, but the battery life is on the order of 1/10th the digital life (seriously, it says so right on the box).
I had no trouble entering frequently called numbers into the phone, and programming it to retrieve my voice mail. Verizon includes caller ID (number only), but if you get a call from a number stored in your phone, it will also display the stored name.
There has been one major problem with my wife's phone. When you plug a headset into the jack on the phone, it can cause a problem with the phone's speaker working properly after you unplug the headset. You can talk but not hear the person on the other end. This has happened twice in six months, and I have heard of other instances of it both on epinions and from Verizon service reps. The phone will still operate with the headset plugged in, which helps a little. Both times Verizon has repaired the phone and given us a loaner, but this problem is unacceptable. If a headset port is provided, it should work properly and not destroy the function of the phone.
I have only used the headset once on my phone, and I have never had a problem.
I would buy this phone again for me, for limited calling and no headset use.
I would not buy this phone again for my wife, who uses a headset.
