| Freak369's Full Review: Aussie Mega Styling Gel |
As some of you know, my oldest son now has a girlfriend. If you ever wanted to see geek love up close and personal, you are invited to come see it first hand. Until Simons girlfriend came in to the picture his biggest concerns in life were getting the newest Lego catalog, the NASA channel listings and writing to his pen pals. Almost overnight my life sized Dexter [Cartoon Network] turned from a mild mannered nerdling to a fashion conscious, deodorant wearing, hair gel freak. Dont get me wrong, he is still a hard-core science junkie but now hes a little more concerned with his appearance and grooming habits. When he started playing around with my hair gels and didnt have much luck I told him that he might want to get his hair cut and get some spikes on top. What a world of difference a trip to the hair salon can do. Ultimately he bypassed all the other gels and mousses and picked out the Aussie Mega Styling Gel as his personal favorite. I grew tired of having to troll over to their bathroom to use this so I picked up a bottle for my oldest and reclaimed mine.
Aussie Mega Styling Gel
Ive been a fan of the Aussie line for a long time and even though I chance my shampoos and conditioners on a regular basis, I usually stick with the Aussie brand for styling. The one thing that I absolutely love about this stuff is the smell. It has a fruity smell to it but not that tropical make you want to puke scent that some products have. The bottle says that it contains Australian Guava, so many thats why Im so addicted to the smell. The gel is thick but doesnt get tacky when you go to apply it to wet or dry hair. Since I have long naturally curly hair I try to only apply this to the bottom part of my hair when its still damp then shake it out and let it air dry. Every person is different but this is what works best for me. The flip top bottle makes it easy to squeeze out a little or a lot and so far we havent had any major disasters with it in regards to leaking or spilling. The 8 ounce bottle I purchased for my son a few months ago is still going strong and he uses it almost every day.
This Aussie product is classified in the firm hold category on their scale of light hold to maximum hold. Personally I think it is one of the strongest gels on the market but then again, I am partial to the smell and the way it leaves my hair manageable yet holds the style. I hate the bulletproof look that some gels and styling aide give your hair, if I cant run my fingers through my hair because the product made it brittle then I wont use it. I was a little worried about my son using this since he got a very short hair cut and I was worried that it might irritate his scalp. Hes never had an extremely short haircut and if I do say so, he looks much better now that he axed the Harry Potter hairstyle he was sporting for a while. He applies this after he gets out of the shower and uses a few drops, rubs it between his palms, slides it on then brushes the spikes in to place. One thing he loves about it is that it rinses off his hands easily and doesnt feel slimy [his words, not mine]. He tried out a few other gels from Salon Selectives, Got2B and Biolage and chose this one over the others, hey, just like his mom - he has good taste.
Ingredients
Water, PVP, Laureth-23, PVP/DMAPA Acrylates Copolymer , Guava, Wild Cherry Bark, Kangaroo Paw Flower, Chamomile , Horsetail, Nettle Extract, Garlic, Dandelion , Triisopropanolamine, Dimethicone Copolyol , Hydroxyethylcellulose, Glyceryl Polymethacrylate, Fragrance, PEG-45M, Propylene Glycol, PVM/MA, Copolymer Methylparaben, DMDM Hydantoin, Propylparaben.
This product does not contain alcohol [which can dry hair] so it can safely be used by most members of the family. If you are leery about using this on younger children there are a wide variety of specialty childrens products on the market you can use instead. When my son started using this I did check his scalp from time to time just to make sure it wasnt drying his skin or making his break out. Im pretty happy to say that hes used this with no problems [unless you count the first time he used it and looked like he dumped a bottle of cooking oil over his head].
Things To Know
I have the best luck using this when my hair is still slightly damp but not dripping wet. If I know I am going to be out and about all day Ill add a little more to my hair so I wont have to worry about playing around with it later in the day. My son uses this mostly after he gets out of the shower but he does use it in the afternoon if he is going out or needs a touch up before seeing his sweetie. If youve never used this before start off with a small amount, you can always add a little more but if you go overboard with it the first time around you might have to wash your hair again to deal with bulletproof hair all day long. The smell is great but thats just my opinion, flip the lip open and give it a sniff before you purchase it to make sure that it is a scent that you like. No matter how well a product performs, if it has an offensive odor to it theres no use in purchasing it.
The Bottom Line
While my other sons wont go near anything deemed girlie, my oldest uses this almost every day after he takes his shower in the morning. Any concerns I had with him using this and the possibility of irritation were tossed out the window after the first week or so but, much to his dismay, I did check his scalp from time to time to make sure it wasnt getting dried out. Id suggest this product for anyone that likes the Aussie line of products or looking for a strong gel that will leave your hair manageable. If I can use this stuff in my hair and still be able to run my fingers through it it gets two thumbs up form me. When I purchased the bottle for my son I paid about $3.00 for it and consider it money well spent.
As always, thanks for the visit
