Can't be too safe--Autistic Child's Emergency Tag--Person with Autism May Not Respond

Written: Feb 26 '08
Pros:Affordable, zipper pull with emergency contact info, easy to see, waterproof
Cons:Pocket is a little too small, would have preferred different color
The Bottom Line: At a low price, this makes the best that I have seen! Affordable safety item for autistic children.

This item came from www.buttonsandmore.com which sells many products for special needs children and autistic children including emergency tags like the Autism ZipperPull Tag as well as buttons to promote autism awareness. I was drawn to this item immediately as I have a child with little to no safety awareness. I have many buttons that I and my daughter wear so people know she is not undisciplined and so they are aware she has special needs. But this item is for her protection and my peace of mind.

The Autism ZipperPull Tag is 2" by 2". I noticed right away that it is bright red and shiny. One problem that I have had with the buttons that pin on is that my daughter has stuck herself and other children accidentally with them. This item does not pin on her jacket. It has an enclosed metal hook that hooks on to her jacket zipper. The white lettering on the tag says Person With Autism May Not Respond To Verbal Commands and then has at the bottom in smaller letters www.ButtonsAndMore.com.

It is made out of soft flexible plastic with a little holder on the back, the little pocket goes 3/4 of the way up the back of the tag. This little open pocket is to place Name, Address, Phone, and Other . It is really much too tiny for all of that information. I was unable to write on the pocket and unable to write all of that information on a piece of paper to slip inside of the pocket either. What I ended up doing was putting our phone number on a piece of paper and putting that inside. Of course I work on teaching my daughter her address, phone number, and my name daily. The pocket is clear so the paper inside can be read without removing it.

I have confidence that this $2.00 emergency tag will be very durable as it is waterproof (the tag itself) and can be wiped off if gotten dirty. Even though I think the bright red is a little too bright, I am glad that if my daughter was lost, people would notice this tag immediately! So they know she may run off or not listen or run in front of a car, or hit someone for no reason or be agitated in a heartbeat. The buttons that we have are mostly white and they do get knocked off, this has stayed on her jacket with no issues. I am not sure where we will put it during the summertime, maybe her jeans belt loop.

What is so good about THIS product?

Bright red, easy to see. Hooks to zipper pull with no pin. Waterproof and wipes off easily when dirty. Very clear letters tells how an autistic child may react. Place to put emergency info.

What is unique about this product?

Hooks on to zipper pull instead of pins on.

Is it worth the price?

Yes, cannot beat $2.00!

There has to be some bad to this product, right?

Pocket for emergency information is very small, hard to put address, name, and phone number. Red is a little bright. I would have preferred orange or a neon color for a child.

Any warnings people should be aware of?

You will want to buy more than one for car, home, trips. This item does not replace parental supervision (hopefully everyone would know that!).

Final verdict:

A great emergency contact tag for children. At a low price, this makes the best that I have seen! Affordable safety item for autistic children.
