An automatic 6-speed bicycle?
Written: Oct 25 '00
Pros:No manual shifting, reliability
Cons:None
When I first saw the ads on television for the Autobike I was somewhat skeptical. How could this possibly ever be worth $400 even if it did work?
Sometime later, my department at work was in the market for two new bicycles for transportation around the plant. While checking with the local bicycle shop for alternatives to buy, I found they carried the Autobike and it was only $250. Since it was not MY money, I decided to order two of them.
I now have to admit, they are exactly as advertised. It is designed to maintain approximately 60 rpm of pedaling regardless of road speed. The area we ride is relatively flat and so this arrangement seems to work out great. I would not go mountain biking with it because it doesn't have that low of a 1st gear ratio, but everyday normal terrain is very manageable. the 6 gear ratios seem to be spaced about right.
The shifting is accomplished with a flywheel system that changes gears as pedaling rpm goes up or down. Shifting is quick and certainly smoother that shifting by hand.
With almost two years of riding behind us, we have had no trouble with the Autobike. It is a pleasure to ride and would recommend to anyone for use in the city or rolling countryside.
