Though I am very pleased with my daily facial cleanser, I do find that I occasionally need a little boost. About every few weeks in the winter, I sometimes feel compelled to use a strong exfoliant, to take care of the extra dead skin cells on my face. If I don't exfoliate, I get build-up, my foundation doesn't look as natural, my skin can look flaky, and my skin will not look as healthy. It was exfoliating time a few days ago, and I decided to go shopping in my bathroom vanity. I came across Avalon Organic Botanicals Exfoliating Enzyme Scrub. I had originally purchased the 4 oz. tube of scrub at Whole Foods for around $10.
The back label of the scrub states that this scrub is designed (with multi-fruit enzymes and gentle exfoliating granules) to "smooth away dull surface cells and impurities that clog pores and cause breakouts. Dramatically improves texture and clarity.."
The Ingredients are:
Certified Organic Lavender Floral Water (Lavandula Officinalis), Certified Organic Aloe Barbadensis, Multi-Fruit Enzymes, Silica, Powdered Corn Meal (Zea Mays), Certified Organic Extracts of Chamomile (Chamomilla Recutita), Echinacea (Echinacea Purpurea), Ginkgo Biloba, Green Tea (Camellia Sinensis), and Lavender (Lavandula Officinalis), Organic Sea Kelp Extract (Laminaria Digitata), Methyl/Propylparaben, Pure Essential Oils.
80% of ingredients are certified organic.
The Directions are:
Rinse face with warm water. Apply small amount of scrub and gently massage over face. Avoid delicate eye area and lips. Rinse clean. Perfect for all skin types. pH Balanced.
I hadn't used the scrub in many, many months, but couldn't remember why. While in the shower, I read the directions, flipped open the cap, and proceeded to squeeze a small amount of the scrub into my hands. I noticed that despite the label stating "Therapeutic Lavender," there really was no noticeable lavender scent. The scrub had a very faint herbal smell. Very faint. The scrub, a thick pale beige/natural colored gel with faint specs in it felt extremely gooey and sticky. I applied the scrub to my wet face, and gently massaged it into my skin. I noticed that the exfoliating granules were so small, and so few, that they were barely noticeable on my skin unless I really scrubbed. My skin didn't feel like it was going through an exfoliation process while I was applying the scrub.
When I rinsed the scrub, my face did feel smooth and soft, but no smoother and softer than it did after I used my standard cleanser. I proceeded with the rest of my shower duties, and dried off. When I dried my face and looked in the mirror, I was greatly disappointed. I could still see the dead skin cell build-up and flakiness. I wasn't surprised though, because my face didn't feel exfoliated after the scrub, despite a bit of skin sensitivity.
At that point, it all came back to me. I remembered that I had tried the scrub several days in a row quite a while ago, and actually found that I would break out a little bit. I had concluded it was because my pores got backed up from not being cleared out. Why I put the scrub in the bathroom vanity instead of simply disposing of it, is beyond me. But, now that I have tried this again, it will be leaving the bathroom vanity, and making its way into the garbage.
This product is 100% vegetarian, and is not tested on animals. I like this, and I like that the ingredients are natural. However, it really has no potency. If Avalon Organics were to up the enzymes and/or add more granules, it might have better results. For now though, it's really not for me.
